What a wonderful evening celebrating Case Management Week with our amazing case managers, social workers, and discharge planners! 💚✨

Angel Hands Hospice was excited to participate, and we had such a great time hosting Designer Purse Bingo at Mariachis! 🌮🍹 From delicious food and fun bingo games to a little friendly competition, the evening was filled with laughter, smiles, and great company.

💕 Most importantly, we had the opportunity to celebrate the incredible professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to coordinate care, support patients and families, and help make a difference in the lives of those they serve.

To all the case managers, social workers, and discharge planners: Thank you for all that you do! We appreciate you, we value the work you do, and we are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside you. 🙌💚

You don’t have to wait until the next business day to ask for help. Hospice care includes support for patients and families when questions or concerns arise — day or night.

📞 Call your hospice team if you notice:
🌿 Changes in breathing, appetite, alertness, or overall condition
🌿 Pain, nausea, anxiety, or other symptoms that aren’t controlled
🌿 Falls, equipment problems, or other unexpected concerns
🌿 Questions about medications, the care plan, or what to expect

🛏️ What Should You Keep Near the Bedside?

When you're caring for someone receiving hospice care, having a few essentials within reach can make daily care easier and more comfortable. 💚

Here are a few helpful items to keep nearby:

✔️ Water or preferred drinks — if safe and appropriate for the patient
✔️ Tissues and a soft washcloth — for everyday comfort and gentle care
✔️ Lip balm and moisturizer — to help ease dryness
✔️ The call bell or phone — so help is within reach
✔️ A favorite blanket or meaningful photo — to create a familiar, comforting space
✔️ A notebook and pen — to record questions, symptoms, or updates for the hospice team

Remember, every patient is different. Your hospice nurse can help you decide what is most appropriate for your family member's needs and how to keep the bedside safe.

Why Do Hospice Patients Stop Wanting Food?

One of the changes families often notice near the end of life is that their loved one no longer wants to eat like they used to.

This can be difficult to understand. Families may worry that their loved one is starving or that they need to encourage them to eat more.

As the body naturally slows down, it may need less energy and fewer nutrients. A decreased appetite or loss of interest in food and drink can be a normal part of the dying process.

Instead of focusing on how much they eat, families can focus on comfort:

🍲 Offer small amounts if they are interested.
💧 Offer sips, ice chips, or mouth care as comfortable.
🕊️ Create a peaceful, comfortable environment.
🍽 Don't force food or fluids when they don't want them.
📞 Talk with the hospice team about changes in appetite or drinking.

Remember: Your loved one's changing appetite does not mean you are failing to care for them. Sometimes, the most loving thing we can do is simply be present, provide comfort, and let the body follow its natural process.
