August was another amazing month when it came to getting out and getting steps in. Our top 5 had a group daily average of 17,351 steps per day, each! Depending on the stride, that is equivalent to walking between 215-269 miles over the course of the month!!! 🀩 Our top stepper averaged 21,369 per day! πŸ‘ŸπŸ‘ŸπŸ‘ŸπŸ‘ŸπŸ‘Ÿ

Physical activity triggers endorphins, which lowers stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Short walking breaks clear the mind, enhances cognitive function, and helps to beat afternoon brain fog. 😎

Remember to stay hydrated, make sure you're getting necessary electrolytes, wear the proper shoes, AND keep on stepping!

Congrats to all our top steppers! πŸ†

August is National Wellness Month! Wellness isn't another item on your to-do-list. It's the foundation that supports everything else. When we feel better, we think more clearly, lead more effectively, and have more energy for the work and people that matter most.

Let's keep going strong EKU! By taking care of ourselves, we are taking care of the community we are here to serve. πŸ‘ŸπŸ‘Ÿ

The month of June proved to be our best month yet, for our monthly step challenge. With beautiful weather, more daylight, vacations, etc., I'm sure many are finding it easier to get their steps in. We averaged over 7000 steps per employee for June, which was our highest average, yet!

Congrats to our top steppers!!! πŸ†

Our current month has had some hot and humid days. Here are some tips to protect yourself from the sun and heat:

πŸ‘’: Wear a wide brimmed hat to shield your face, ears, and neck.

😎: Use high-quality UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun.

🧴: Apply sunscreen to cover all exposed areas of skin, and reapply every couple hours or immediately after heavy sweating.

πŸ’§: Drink water before you start walking! If your walk is as long as an hour, include electrolyte replacement drinks to avoid muscle cramps and dehydration.

πŸšΆπŸ»β€β™€οΈ: Pick a shaded route. Choose shaded parks or neighborhood with shaded trees and canopies.

🀩: Use cooling accessories such as a specialized cooling towel to drape around your neck.

Keep up the GREAT work and let's keep stepping! πŸ‘Ÿ

Our May step challenge proved, once again, that the sky is the limit for EKU Employees. Although it was a small increase, we hit an average of 6759 per day as a group. We have continued to climb with each month that goes by. Current reports show that we are already ahead of the game for June...just have to keep it up! πŸšΆπŸ½πŸšΆπŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸšΆπŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸšΆπŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸšΆπŸΎβ€β™€οΈπŸšΆπŸ»

With June being Alzheimer and Brain Awareness Month, let's take a look at how walking is good for brain health:πŸ’‘

-Slows Protein Buildup: Regular walking is associated with slower rates of cognitive decline because it physically helps slow the buildup of tau proteins in the brain.

- Boosts "Brain Fertilizer": Being physically active prompts the brain to produce BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). This substance promotes the growth and survival of brain cells, particularly in the hippocampus, which is the brain's memory center.

- Strengthens Neural Networks: Walking has been shown to strengthen the connections in and between brain networks, actively improving memory recall and combating the onset of mild cognitive impairment.

Keep up the GREAT work, EKU!
