We had an amazing time in Lick Creek, Kentucky this past weekend!

With the support of our amazing volunteers, Community Host Group, and donors, we were able to bring free dental, vision, and medical care to hundreds of patients!

Remote Area Medical served more than 285 patients and brought more than $260,000 worth of care.

A big thank you to our more than 440 volunteers and our community partners!

The Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic in Verona was a first for Wisconsin, and for several volunteers!

Karen and Isaac, two registered nurses, volunteered with RAM for the first time at the Verona Clinic. Karen learned about RAM after watching the 60 Minutes segment in April, while Isaac saw a flyer at UW Health in Madison, where he works. They were surprised by the scale of the clinic and found the CORE volunteers welcoming and eager to help.

Both stepped outside their usual roles to assist in the dental care area with suction during a cleaning. Dr. MaryAnn, the dentist they assisted, was also a first-time RAM volunteer and assured us it would not be her last. Karen and Isaac said the same.

Jake was desperate to regain confidence in his appearance, but after getting a $1,300 quote to fix his chipped front tooth, he knew he needed to find another option. Thankfully, he had just seen a TikTok video in which the creator mentioned the free RAM Clinic in Colorado Springs.

“I was just going on TikTok, and that’s how I found out about here,” Jake said, gesturing to the clinic. “I looked into this website, for RAM, and noticed they could fix it and so I was like ‘Oh, I gotta show up.’”

Our volunteers worked hard today setting up in Lick Creek, Kentucky. They transformed East Ridge High School into a Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic with dental care stations, medical bays, and vision lanes.

Dr. Chris Martin is a semi-retired optometrist who still practices in the Chicago area. He came to the Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic in Verona, Wisconsin, with a particular goal in mind.

After volunteering at the last two RAM Clinics in Paris, Illinois, Dr. Martin wanted to support the mobile vision care area by donating two valuable pieces of equipment.

The first is a portable retinal camera used to examine the eye. While most optometrists use larger cameras in their offices, this handheld version is well suited for mobile RAM Clinics.

The second may seem simple, but it will make a significant difference. Dr. Martin designed a system of metal rods that clamps two phoropters, tools optometrists use to determine eyeglass prescriptions, to a single folding table. Instead of using a row of tripods, RAM can now set up the phoropters with just a few tables.

Nathan Miller, a pre-med student at Northwestern University, understands the impact a Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic can have.

At our recent clinic in Verona, the first in his home state of Wisconsin, Nathan took an active role as a member of our Community Host Group, Wisconsin Care Collective, and as a CORE volunteer.

He wanted to help host the clinic because he believes it can help students like him learn to care for those in need of healthcare, not just as patients, but as people.
