And so the journey begins. I am deeply grateful to be visiting the Ramamani Iyengar Memorials Yoga Institute ( ) in Pune, India. In a world where yoga seems so much about the “show,” the sensationalism, getting “blissed out,” it is so refreshing to be in a place guided by quiet, sincere reflection on what the genuine yoga tradition teaches, and an earnest attempt to embody those principles, this becoming a better and nobler version of oneself. Of course there is tremendous “power” in the yoga (in nearly 30 years of practice, I have never quite used my legs so potently in standing asanas), but the real power lies not in the yoga we “do,” but rather in what the yoga we do can do to us!

I am inspired to share my take on this tradition as I immerse myself in its study this month. Join me online via Zoom, or come to the Center to utilize our props and practice hall during the livestream, for classes September 6, 13, 19 and 26 at 8:30 a.m. (EDT).

Come for live in-person (or Zoom) classes with Dr. Michelle Akler, fresh from her own growth adventure of a “medical mission” trip where she volunteered her ophthalmological skills to provide essential vision services to patients in Kenya, Africa. Classes will be held on Sunday, September 20 and 27 at 9:00 a.m. (EDT).

Yoga is meant to be meaningful and transformative, not just “exercisive.” We are committed to providing this at the Center for Iyengar Yoga.

A bit delayed posting this. Days have been full in Pune, what with 5-7 hours of practice per day, plus study, and some extra naps to dissolve the jet lag. Still worth sharing, in my opinion: Leg 2 of the flight (Amsterdam to Delhi) complete. Watch your step.

Where else do you see dogs milling about at the airport?

🇮🇳❤️

The journey begins. What a privilege and, as my teacher, Prashant Iyengar often reminds his students, a responsibility! I intend to make the most of this opportunity to study genuine yoga at an extraordinary depth.

ECHOES OF FREEDOM
AN IYENGAR YOGA WORKSHOP

Featuring distilled teachings from the lineage of B.K.S. Iyengar: Prashant Iyengar, Srineeth Sridharan, Abhijata Iyengar, as taught by Metro Detroit’s only Level III Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and Director of the Center for Iyengar Yoga, Christopher Briney.

Christopher Brings nearly 30 years of yoga experience, nearly 25 years of continuous study of Iyengar Yoga, over 12 years of study with Prashant Iyengar, as well as recent immersions in the teachings of Srineeth Sridharan (B.K.S. Iyengar’s grandson). In addition, Christopher recently attended the National Iyengar Yoga Association of the United States’ () triennial convention, “Cultivating Freedom,” which was led by Abhijata Iyengar (B.K.S. Iyengar’s granddaughter).

When asked about this workshop, Christopher said, “There is so much more to yoga than what we normally see. If practitioners can see deeper into the subject, it will radically transform not only their practice, but the very fabric of who they are. The teachings of Iyengar Yoga, particularly as I have experienced them from this lineage of teachers, are a sure way to see deeper into the subject of yoga, and thus transform yourself. It is my aim to help my students know yoga in greater and greater depth, because that’s what brings out the best in them.”

Only 5 in-person spaces left!

Register today (see link in bio, or visit: https://www.centerforiyengaryoga.com/class-schedule-pricing/freedomworkshop) and begin your journey to the Ultimate!
