O'Keefe Matz Chiropractic & Functional Health Clinic

O'Keefe Matz Chiropractic & Functional Health Clinic Achieve Better Health Through Functional Medicine, Neurofeedback, Chiropractic & Acupuncture Have you ever been told that you are “fine” but still feel bad?

Or maybe you really do feel that you are in perfect health. Many problems show up in the blood long before you actually “feel” symptoms. Did you know you can have 20% liver or kidney function left and still have virtually no symptoms? How do you know if you’re truly healthy? Certain tests, when read properly, will indicate whether or not you are progressing toward a serious illness, such as cancer

, liver, heart or many other diseases. Wouldn’t it be better to stop these problems before they progressed into something serious? Or wouldn’t it be great if you could get back to the state of health you were in before you became ill? Starting with a consultation, the doctor will determine the testing that should be done. Using blood work and other diagnostic tools, we do an in-depth analysis of your system. The testing will tell us where the problem areas are occurring or just developing. During your report of findings we will carefully note major and minor conditions that may lead to serious illness. This detailed report will explain your test findings, as well as the nutrient and dietary recommendations based upon your test results. How do we know our recommendations will work for you? What makes us different from other nutritionists? We TEST and then retest to determine your progress. There is no guess work...it is all in the testing.

Functional medicine doesn't ask "what disease do you have?" — it asks "why is your body struggling in the first place?" This root-cause approach goes beyond symptom management to explore the connections between your gut, hormones, immune system, and brain.

When we understand what's actually driving your symptoms, we can create a plan that addresses them — not just masks them. If you're in the Twin Cities and ready for a different kind of care, visit improveurhealth.com to learn more or book your free consultation.

Neurofeedback isn't a passive treatment — it's active brain training. During a session, you're connected to sensors that read your brainwave activity in real time. When your brain produces healthier patterns, you receive a positive signal — through sound, visuals, or both. Over dozens of sessions, the brain learns to sustain those healthier patterns on its own. It's the same principle as physical training, applied to the brain.

At O'Keefe Matz in Saint Paul, every neurofeedback program is guided by a QEEG brain map and personalized to your specific patterns. Swipe to see how a session actually works. Book at improveurhealth.com.

Inflammation is one of the most common threads we see running through chronic health conditions — and it connects the brain and the body in ways that are often overlooked. Neuroinflammation can contribute to depression, cognitive decline, and fatigue. Systemic inflammation in the gut, joints, or immune system creates a feedback loop that keeps the nervous system on high alert. At O'Keefe Matz, we investigate inflammatory drivers through advanced functional lab testing and address them from both ends — gut and brain, body and nervous system — for a more complete and lasting resolution. If your memory has been slipping, your focus has been harder to hold, or your sleep has gotten worse -- and you have been told it is just part of getting older -- we want you to know there is another conversation worth having.

The brain has a remarkable capacity to adapt and change at any age. This is not wishful thinking -- it is the science of neuroplasticity, and it is the foundation of every neurofeedback program at O'Keefe Matz.

But brain health does not exist in isolation. Many of the cognitive changes that get written off as aging are driven by factors that are very much addressable: thyroid dysfunction, chronic neuroinflammation, hormonal shifts, blood sugar dysregulation, gut-brain axis disruption, and nutritional deficiencies that affect neurotransmitter production and cellular energy metabolism. A QEEG brain map can show us how your brain is actually functioning -- which regions are underactive, overactive, or out of sync -- while comprehensive functional lab testing can identify the metabolic drivers that may be contributing.

At O'Keefe Matz Functional Health Clinic in Saint Paul, we work with older adults and their families who are looking for real options, not just reassurance that decline is inevitable. We combine QEEG-guided neurofeedback with Dr. O'Keefe's functional medicine approach to address both sides of what may be happening in your brain and body.

You deserve more than that's just aging. Book a free 15-minute phone consultation -- link in bio.

Here is something most people do not know, and it matters a great deal for anyone considering neurofeedback.

If there is an underlying metabolic issue, a thyroid problem, a gut imbalance, or a hormonal disruption, neurofeedback will not reach its full potential. The brain cannot train its way out of a body that is not functioning well.

This is not a limitation of neurofeedback. It is simply biology. The brain is not a separate organ operating in isolation -- it is constantly shaped by what is happening in the body. Neuroinflammation driven by gut permeability affects mood, cognition, and the brain's ability to regulate itself. Thyroid dysfunction affects neurotransmitter production and energy metabolism in neurons. Cortisol dysregulation from chronic stress keeps the nervous system in a state of high alert that makes it harder for the brain to shift into calmer, more focused patterns.

At O'Keefe Matz in Saint Paul, Dr. Shannon O'Keefe and Dr. Janell Matz work together because they have seen firsthand what happens when you address both sides. Functional medicine removes the barriers -- the inflammation, the hormonal dysregulation, the nutritional deficiencies -- that prevent the brain from responding fully. Neurofeedback then trains the brain to build on that improved foundation. The results are something neither achieves as reliably on its own.

If you are ready to find out what whole-person care could do for you, a free 15-minute phone consultation is the best place to start.

On their own, neurofeedback and photobiomodulation are each powerful tools for brain health. Together, they work in a way that makes both more effective, and the science behind that combination is worth understanding.

Photobiomodulation works at the cellular level. When near-infrared light reaches the brain, it activates mitochondrial function -- specifically an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase -- which increases the brain's production of ATP, its primary energy currency. This means neurons have more energy available to form new connections, repair damaged tissue, and regulate their own activity. It also reduces neuroinflammation, which is a common underlying factor in conditions ranging from depression and brain fog to concussion recovery and cognitive decline.

Neurofeedback works at the network level. Using real-time EEG feedback, it trains the brain to recognize dysregulated patterns and shift toward healthier, more balanced states over time. The changes that come from neurofeedback are built on neuroplasticity -- the brain's ability to rewire itself -- and they tend to last because the brain has genuinely learned, not just been temporarily suppressed or stimulated.

When you use both together, photobiomodulation creates a better cellular environment for learning. The brain has more energy, less inflammation, and greater capacity for the kind of adaptation that neurofeedback is asking it to do. At O'Keefe Matz in Saint Paul, Dr. Janell Matz uses both in combination for exactly this reason.
