I began studying astrology five decades ago because I was looking for a deeper way to understand myself, other people and life’s unfolding. When I lost my twin sister Lou Ann in 2005, I understood astrology quite well and found that the planets offered something I hadn't known I needed: a map. Not a map that told me when I would stop hurting, but one that helped me understand why certain moments cracked me open, what that pain was asking of me, and where I might be able to heal.
A death chart is a chart for the date, place and time of death: a natal chart studied through the lens of loss. It is a way of asking: what did this death mean in the arc of a soul's life? What was being completed, transformed, or released? The Solar eclipses, transits of Pluto, Uranus, Saturn, the nodes of the moon — these are the planets and symbols that speak to endings, and they speak in a language of extraordinary depth and soulfulness.
When Lou Ann was dying, I looked at both our charts almost every day. I watched as Uranus moved into an exact opposition with her natal Sun— Uranus, the Great Awakener polarized with the Sun, representing core identity. And I saw something I had not expected: it wasn't only a chart of ending. It was a chart of becoming. Both of us were waking up spiritually and opening to a new paradigm. Lou Ann to whatever lies beyond life, and me to a new chapter of life lived as a singleton that would take me in unexpected directions.
I've worked with clients who came to me years after a devastating loss, still tangled in grief they couldn't move through. When we looked at the charts—the chart of the moment of death and their own natal chart — something would shift. They would see the loss not as a rupture in the story of their life, but as a chapter the universe had written with great intention. That reframe doesn't erase grief. But it can transform grief's relationship to meaning, and meaning, I have learned, is one of the factors that allows us to go on.
Death Charts grew out of decades of this work — my own losses, my clients' losses, and my deep conviction that astrology is one of the most powerful tools available to people navigating this difficult terrain of a human life. In these pages, I'll walk you through how to read the astrological signatures of death and dying, how to find meaning in the timing of loss, and how the chart of someone you've loved and lost can continue to speak to you — and through you — long after they are gone.
The stars have always known about loss. They have been charting it since long before we had words for what we were feeling. This book is my attempt to teach you to read what they have written.
