Balance is a symptom of yoga. Almost every successful experience we have we can look back and see the challenges presented along the way. Every hardship comes with silver linings of insight or wisdom to propel us forward. In this way, all things good and bad are connected to a tail of there equal opposites. On the mat this concept is realized and even exhausted by repeatedly pushing down to rise or lifting up as we fold down, etc. Over time the practice itself becomes a space of countering, even to the pulse of our everyday directions. Over and again this counter action cultivates an acquired taste for the middle ground. We lose the desire for big sensation and no longer lean heavily in any fundamental ways of thought. This delivers a wave of peace over the mind and in time, the body. There is a sense of contentment with where we are instead of the constant striving for a better position, the tireless pursuit of another project, or desire for a different status. We have all seen the student working for balance in a challenging pose. They are literally grasping at the air or trying so hard to “do” balance that they fall over in the process. Once we get tired of playing along the periphery this way, we finally # rest in our center only to see that we are gaining more by doing so much less

Curiosity is a symptom of yoga.
One way that we try to protect ourselves from suffering is to make predictions of danger based on the incoming data that our life provides. This educated foresight is usually followed by a code of reactions that steer us from danger and to safety. This worked well when our life was in danger constantly yet we still use this strategy today. As we get caught up in this life hack, it becomes harder to see that we are merely trading one form of suffering for another. By successfully avoiding hardship or enhance our coping strategies we can exhaust our life force in the process and lose our skills to handle stress when it inevitably shows up. Yoga teaches us to neither run from or towards our experience, but to suspend our awareness around it. Like a scientist in a lab, we observe ourselves in the moment. Now loaded with hard data, we learn to be more versatile and skillful at handling challenges by slowing down our reactive nature and replacing it with curiosity.

Props inspire a sense of creativity and play. When using a prop, contemplative opportunities present themselves. We can lose the rigid ideas of what a pose is supposed to be or look like and become more playful. With care, playfulness inspires a freedom to explore and create unique additions or subtractions to a pose custom to you. A returning to the joyful, childlike nature that most of us desire to reenact.

Props are not a dumbed down version of a pose. Instead, a prop can reduce the physical output of the pose to increase the insight the pose has to offer. Organization of energy, thought, and alignment can all be revealed when the body is not straining. Next time you find yourself in a pose that is extremely challenging, find a prop to support the education of the pose. With that wisdom the bodies receptivity to the pose will increase and lead you toward a fuller expression with or without the prop.

Perspective is a symptom of yoga. Yoga is about relationship. Every posture taken is followed by the question: “How am I in this pose?” Over and over again the mind keeps observing the body in relation to space and building that relationship with the body’s current shape. As the skill of knowing ourselves develops, we begin to see clearer. Not only ourselves in space, but how we relate to others that surround that space.

Mother’s Day Offering

Touch is more than a luxury—it’s essential to our well-being. From the very beginning of life, a mother’s touch helps regulate an infant’s heartbeat, ease stress, and create a deep sense of safety and connection. It’s one of the first ways we experience care, and its impact stays with us long into adulthood.

As life gets busy, many mothers spend so much time caring for others that they rarely pause to receive that same level of care themselves.

Therapeutic bodywork offers a powerful way to restore balance. Through intentional, nurturing touch, it helps calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and bring the body back to a state of ease and renewal.

This Mother’s Day, give her more than a gift—give her the opportunity to feel cared for, supported, and restored.

For a limited time, enjoy $20 off any gift certificate purchased between now and Mother’s Day.

Let her receive the care she so often gives to everyone else.
