As students head back to school, from elementary classrooms to college campuses, a troubling trend continues. Research shows that 92% of young people who have heard the “R-word” say they first heard it used as a slur.

Through its Spread the Word campaign, Special Olympics is working to change that by encouraging more respectful and inclusive language. Andrea Cahn, Senior Vice President of Unified Champion Schools, joined Melissa in the Morning to talk about the campaign, what the data tells us, and how schools can help create more welcoming environments for all students.

On 8/8, Special Olympics Southern California Tri Counties partnered with Harley’s Valley Bowl, Santa Paula PD, and Simi Valley PD to host the 2026 Ventura County Bowling Competition. Huge congratulations to all 201 athletes who competed, and a big thank you to our incredible volunteers and partners who helped make the day possible.
We’re grateful to Harley’s Valley Bowl for hosting us and to Santa Paula PD and Simi Valley PD for leading our Opening Ceremony and helping award medals to our athletes. Thank you for supporting inclusion and making this competition a success!
