TMJ disorder — pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles — is frequently dismissed as a dental problem, a stress problem, or something patients just need to live with.

It is none of those things.

TMJ dysfunction often involves a combination of jaw joint mechanics, cervical tension, bite imbalance, and nervous system sensitization. Acupuncture and manual therapy address the muscle tension and cervical involvement directly — reducing pain, improving jaw opening, and breaking the cycle of nighttime clenching and daytime guarding that keeps the condition active.

If you have been dealing with jaw pain, clicking, facial tension, or headaches that no one has been able to resolve, this is worth exploring.

Goji berries have been used in Chinese medicine for over two thousand years — long before they became a wellness trend.

In Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, goji (Gǒu Qǐ Zǐ, 枸杞子) is classified as neutral and sweet, with a strong affinity for the Liver and Kidney. They tonify Liver Blood and Kidney Yin — supporting vision, low back strength, fatigue recovery, and the kind of age-related depletion that shows up as dryness, weakness, and poor sleep.

Modern research has identified high concentrations of zeaxanthin — one of the most studied compounds for macular health — along with polysaccharides with documented immune-modulating and antioxidant effects.

Runner's knee — patellofemoral pain syndrome — affects far more than runners. It is common in cyclists, hikers, anyone who uses stairs regularly, and older adults whose knee mechanics have shifted over time.

The underlying issue is usually a combination of tracking problems, hip and quad weakness, and soft tissue tension that changes how the kneecap moves. Pain medication and rest address the symptom. Addressing the mechanics and the tissue actually fixes it.

At AcuMed Clinic, we treat patellofemoral syndrome with acupuncture, targeted manual therapy, and movement-focused care — getting patients back to the activities they have been avoiding.

Salmon is one of the most clinically significant anti-inflammatory foods available — and one of the most consistently supported by modern research.

In Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, salmon is classified as warm and sweet, tonifying Qi and Blood and supporting the Spleen and Stomach. In modern nutrition, it is among the richest sources of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids — the compounds most directly associated with reduced systemic inflammation, improved joint health, and neurological support.

For patients managing chronic pain, neuropathy, arthritis, or any condition with an inflammatory component, consistent salmon consumption is a meaningful dietary intervention — not a supplement, not a pharmaceutical, just food doing what food has always done.

Disc issues — herniated discs, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease — are among the most common diagnoses given to patients with back and leg pain. They are also among the most over-treated with aggressive interventions.

Most disc changes are not emergencies. Many people have significant disc pathology on imaging with no symptoms at all. And many patients with disc-related pain improve substantially with conservative, non-surgical care — particularly when treatment addresses the full picture: nerve irritation, surrounding muscle guarding, joint loading patterns, and inflammation.

At AcuMed Clinic, we approach disc issues as part of a broader pattern — not as a structural defect that can only be corrected surgically.

Ringing in the ears that no one else can hear. A tone, hum, or whoosh that does not turn off. Worsening with stress, fatigue, or caffeine. Most patients with tinnitus are told: nothing can be done.

That is not our experience.

At AcuMed Clinic, tinnitus is treated as a pattern with identifiable causes — often involving Kidney Qi or Blood Deficiency, Liver involvement, or upper cervical tension and nerve irritation. Acupuncture, manual therapy, and constitutional support can meaningfully reduce both the intensity and frequency of tinnitus, particularly when it has not been present for decades.

It is not a guaranteed resolution. But it is a real option that most patients have never been offered.

In Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, walnuts are one of the most valued foods for tonifying Kidney Yang — supporting structural warmth, low back and knee strength, and the kind of resilience that declines with age and chronic depletion.

They have been used for centuries for low back pain, knee weakness, and fatigue that does not resolve with rest — symptoms AHM associates with Kidney Deficiency.

From a modern nutrition standpoint, walnuts are among the highest dietary sources of plant-based omega-3s and polyphenols, with well-documented anti-inflammatory effects relevant to joint, cardiovascular, and neurological health.

Hip osteoarthritis is one of the most common reasons adults in Sarasota start limiting their walks, their golf game, or the activities they have built their retirement around.

It is also one of the most common reasons patients are told surgery is their only long-term option.

Acupuncture, laser therapy, and injection therapy can meaningfully reduce hip joint inflammation, improve function, and maintain quality of life in patients with moderate to advanced osteoarthritis. For patients who are not surgical candidates, or who want to delay or avoid surgery, conservative integrative care is a serious option — not a placeholder.

Fresh ginger has been used as medicine in nearly every traditional culture for thousands of years. In Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, it is classified as warm and pungent — dispersing cold, warming digestion, relieving nausea, and supporting Lung and Spleen function.

Fresh ginger is not the same as dried ginger. In AHM, they have different thermal qualities and different clinical applications. Using one when you need the other produces different results. This distinction matters if you are using ginger intentionally rather than just as a flavoring.

The full fresh ginger food profile — including how it compares to dried ginger, clinical notes, and contraindications — is now in AcuMed Clinic's AHM Food Library.

Frozen shoulder — adhesive capsulitis — is painful, frustrating, and frequently mismanaged. Not because it is complicated, but because it progresses in three distinct stages, and what helps in one stage can be counterproductive in another.

Freezing. Frozen. Thawing. Most patients are not told which phase they are in, and their treatment does not change accordingly.

At AcuMed Clinic, we assess where you are in that process and build a plan around it — using acupuncture, manual therapy, and targeted mobilization to reduce inflammation, restore range of motion, and shorten the recovery timeline.

If your shoulder has been stiffening for weeks or months, do not wait. Most patients wait too long.
