September is Women in Medicine Month—a time to celebrate the extraordinary contributions of women physicians, honor those who opened doors before us, and continue building a future in which women can lead, thrive, and make their fullest impact in medicine.

Throughout September, the American Medical Women’s Association will celebrate women in medicine across generations.

🎬 Bringing 1001 CUTS to a national audience
AMWA is proud to partner in the PBS premiere and screening of this powerful documentary examining the experiences of women surgeons and the gender inequities that persist in medicine.

🎙️ Annual Women in Medicine Lectureship
We will co-host this annual conversation with the Women in Medicine Legacy Foundation, bringing together distinguished leaders to explore leadership, science, and the future of healthcare.

🌟 Celebrating our 2026 AMWA INSPIRE Awardees
Later this month, we will recognize an extraordinary group of women physicians who lead, mentor, innovate, advocate, educate, serve—and inspire those around them.

🏛️ Presidents, Pioneers, and Progress: The Women Who Led AMWA
We will close the month by launching a new historical exhibition celebrating the generations of women physicians who have led AMWA since its founding in 1915—and whose leadership helped shape both our organization and the larger history of women in medicine.

Progress is built across generations.

We honor the pioneers who opened doors. We celebrate the women transforming medicine today. And we invest in those who will lead medicine next.

This September, join AMWA in celebrating Women in Medicine Month.

AMWA remembers with love and gratitude Mary Ellen Morrow, our beloved longtime photographer and cherished member of the AMWA family.

The daughter of AMWA Past President Dr. Laura Morrow, Mary Ellen grew up with AMWA as part of her life—and over the years, she became an important part of ours. Through her camera lens, she captured countless moments of friendship, celebration, leadership, and history, preserving memories that will remain part of AMWA’s legacy for generations to come.
But Mary Ellen gave us far more than photographs. She brought warmth, humor, creativity, and a deep devotion to the AMWA community. She cared about getting every photograph just right—and always wanted each of us to look our very best.

We will miss seeing Mary Ellen behind the camera at our gatherings, but we will continue to see AMWA through her eyes in the thousands of moments she so lovingly preserved.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family and all who knew and loved her. Those wishing to honor Mary Ellen’s memory may also consider making a gift to AMWA.

What’s women’s professional baseball got to do with AMWA?

Quite a lot, as it turns out.

The inaugural season of the Women’s Pro Baseball League is making history—and one of its four teams, the Boston Hunters, is named in honor of pioneering woman physician Dr. Harriot Kezia Hunt (1805–1875).

Dr. Hunt established a successful medical practice decades before women were widely accepted into the medical profession. Twice denied admission to Harvard Medical School because she was a woman, she nevertheless continued learning, practicing medicine, caring for patients, and claiming a place in a profession that was not yet ready to welcome her.

Now, nearly two centuries later, her name is being carried onto a professional baseball field by women breaking barriers of their own.

AMWA Past President Dr. Susan Hingle attended one of the inaugural games in Springfield, Illinois, and beautifully captured what it means for children—especially young girls—to witness women doing something they previously could not grow up to do professionally.

That connection between past and future resonates deeply with AMWA. Since 1915, generations of women physicians have opened doors, challenged assumptions, and created opportunities for those who came next.

Whether in medicine or on the baseball diamond, representation expands our sense of what is possible.

We’ll be cheering for the women taking the field—and celebrating the pioneering women whose shoulders they stand upon. ⚾👩‍⚕️

📰 AMWA IN THE NEWS Stories matter—especially when they preserve experiences that might otherwise go unheard.

Two recent AMWA articles reflect on reproductive health care before Roe and in the years since Dobbs:

🔹 Why Pre-Roe Abortion Stories Matter Again After Dobbs — Dr. Laurel Waters reflects on firsthand accounts from women who sought abortion care before Roe and why preserving these stories matters today.

🔹 Four Years After Dobbs, the Untold Stories Still Matter — Dr. Theresa Rohr-Kirchgraber and Dr. Lara Hart examine the impact of Dobbs on patients, physicians, trainees, and communities.

Behind every policy and headline are real people whose experiences deserve to be heard. 💙
