Grief after brain injury is often complex, ongoing, and difficult to name. There may be no clear ending, no shared language, and no simple path forward.

This three-part series explores ambiguous loss and how it impacts individuals living with traumatic or acquired brain injury. Together, we will explore grief connected to changes in identity, ability, relationships, and the challenge of navigating a reality that may feel unfamiliar or unresolved.

🧠 Session 1 (30 minutes): Naming the Loss
This session introduces the concept of ambiguous loss — grief that occurs without clear closure or resolution.

We will explore:
• What ambiguous loss is
• Different types of loss experienced after brain injury
• Why this grief can feel confusing, ongoing, or “stuck”
• Normalizing mixed emotions such as grief, relief, anger, and numbness

💬 Reflection & Discussion (30 minutes)
Together, we will reflect on the question:
“What is the hardest part of your experience to explain to others?”

You are not alone in this experience. 💙

Dear Brain Northwest Community,

It’s that time of year again—when we come together to uplift and sustain the work that matters most through GiveBIG. This annual moment is more than a fundraiser; it’s a chance to reaffirm our shared commitment to individuals and families navigating life after brain injury.

We know there are many worthy causes, and where you choose to give truly matters. Your support of Brain Northwest directly strengthens a community that is too often underserved. We provide critical, person-centered resources that are not always easy to find elsewhere—spaces where individuals feel seen, heard, and supported.

Through our classes and workshops, we create welcoming environments that honor lived experience and prioritize trauma-informed care. These are not just educational sessions—they are places of connection, healing, and empowerment. In addition, our support line offers a compassionate point of contact for community members seeking guidance, resources, or simply someone who will listen.

We’re also excited to share that this summer we will launch a new program: Brain Injury 101. This initiative is designed to support newly diagnosed survivors as they begin to navigate life after injury—offering practical tools, foundational knowledge, and a sense of direction during an often overwhelming time.
Your generosity makes all of this possible. Every contribution helps us continue—and expand—this essential work.

Thank you for being part of the Brain Northwest community and for standing with us.

With gratitude,
Brain Northwest

Many effects of a brain injury are not visible to others.

Survivors often find themselves explaining symptoms, navigating misunderstanding, or feeling pressure to appear “normal.”

In this live session, we’ll explore what it’s really like to live with an invisible disability. We’ll talk about stigma, self-advocacy, and the emotional effort it can take to be believed and understood.

We’ll also discuss practical ways to communicate needs clearly and help create environments where brain differences are respected, supported, and not dismissed. 💙

We hope you’ll join us for this important conversation.
