I saw a post recently from a friend asking if we should be happy all the time.

And my honest answer to that is: No.

Not because happiness is bad. Happiness is beautiful when it comes. There are moments of joy, laughter, ease, gratitude, celebration, and lightness that are meant to be felt and enjoyed.

But happiness is also fragile.

Happiness can shift when life shifts. And life is always shifting.

There may be concerns about the state of the world, finances, our own health, job changes, family issues, or the unknown.

There will almost always be something happening that can affect our level of happiness.

So if our goal is to be happy all the time, we may constantly feel like we are failing. The moment life gets complicated, heavy, uncertain, or disappointing, we may think we are doing something wrong because we no longer feel happy.

But maybe happiness was never meant to be the permanent place we live.
Maybe the deeper goal is peace.

Peace is different ~ Peace is steadier

Peace does not mean everything around us is calm. It does not mean we ignore what is happening. It does not mean we pretend life is perfect, or that we force ourselves to smile through every hard thing.

Peace means we have somewhere to stand when life is uncertain.

Peace says:
“I can see what is happening.”
“I can be aware.”
“I can respond.”
“I do not have to collapse into fear.”
“I can trust that I will know the next right step.”

When we chase happiness, we can become frustrated because happiness comes and goes. It may depend on circumstances, other people, outcomes, timing, finances, health, relationships, or whether life feels “good” in the moment.

But peace is something deeper inside of us. Peace gives us a grounded place to return to even when life is moving, changing, or feeling chaotic.

The opposite of peace is fear. So in fragile moments, we need to discern: am I operating from peace, or am I operating from fear?

Sometimes we are not being discerning.

Sometimes we are simply operating from fear.
