What would you say if you had just 30 seconds to tell the world what a DSP means to you?

Direct Support Professionals help people build lives filled with choice, connection, independence, and opportunity. Their impact is often felt every day but rarely seen by the broader community.

Help us celebrate the impact of DSPs by recording a quick video to finish this sentence: "A DSP is..." Use 1 or 2 words and tell us why you chose them.

Your video can be recorded from your phone in less than a minute, but it could help someone understand the true value of this work.

Video submissions close September 6th. http://SEEC.memfox.io/bwoqzd

A unanimous committee vote was an important step. Now we need Congress to keep the momentum going.

Direct Support Professionals are still not recognized as a distinct occupation by the federal government. The Recognizing the Role of Direct Support Professionals Act would help change that by improving workforce data and strengthening future efforts around recruitment, retention, and compensation.

The hardest labels to leave behind are often the ones other people put on us.

The New Me: Living Without Labels by Macena is a story about being seen for who you are, not who others assume you to be. Through Macena's partnership with SEEC, this message of self-direction, belonging, and living life on your own terms reaches even further.

The people who thrive at SEEC are curious about others, comfortable building relationships, and willing to slow down long enough to listen.

The work is real. The connections are real. And every day looks a little different.

A clean front window might seem like a small thing, but it's often the first welcome a visitor receives.

At the National Capital Trolley Museum, David helps make that welcome possible by keeping the entrance windows spotless and inviting. His work is part of what helps visitors feel cared for before they even step inside.

Partnerships like this create opportunities for people to contribute their skills in ways that matter, while helping local organizations with the everyday work that keeps their spaces running smoothly. When businesses, museums, and community organizations open their doors, everyone benefits.

Before a first day at work, there is practice.

There are routines to learn, questions to ask, skills to build, and confidence that grows one step at a time. Project SEARCH Boot Camp is part of that preparation.
It gives interns space to get ready for the expectations, relationships, and possibilities that come with employment.

On August 6, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee unanimously approved S. 3211, the Recognizing the Role of Direct Support Professionals Act, advancing the bill to the full Senate for consideration. The legislation would direct the federal government to consider creating a distinct occupational classification for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), providing better data on wages, vacancies, turnover, and workforce shortages while formally recognizing DSPs as essential professionals.

This matters to SEEC because DSPs are the foundation of the supports and services that help people live meaningful lives in their communities. Increased recognition of the profession can strengthen future advocacy efforts around workforce development, compensation, recruitment, and retention. While the bill still has additional steps before becoming law, this unanimous vote is an encouraging sign that policymakers are paying attention to the critical role DSPs play every day and the workforce challenges facing the field.

Thank you to all DSPs and advocates whose voices continue to elevate the profession and the people we support.

Real inclusion shows up in ordinary ways. Someone is invited back. Someone is asked what they want. Someone gets to contribute, choose, try again, and be part of the group.

That is the work SEEC is part of every day: helping people build lives with more choice, more connection, and more room to be known for who they are.
