Meet Holly! Holly was born with a cleft lip and palate, and her journey has come with a few extra challenges, particularly when it comes to feeding.

Because of her cleft palate, Holly struggled with feeding early on and needed the support of a feeding tube to help her grow and thrive. She's continued working toward taking more of her nutrition by mouth and has made wonderful progress!

Earlier this year, Holly underwent her cleft lip repair, and today she met with Dr. Gailey to discuss the next step in her journey, palate repair.

These before and after photos show the beautiful results of her lip repair, but they also represent months of growth, healing, and hard work.

For families navigating similar challenges, Holly's story is a reminder that progress takes time and every milestone matters.

Meet Max!

Max was born with a cleft lip and palate, and we have had the privilege of watching this sweet little guy grow from a tiny newborn into the happy, thriving toddler you see today.

These photos tell such a beautiful story. From Max at just 2 weeks old, to shortly after his lip repair, to one year old, and now at 20 months, you can see how much healing continues long after surgery. His scar has softened and faded beautifully, and the shape and contour of his upper lip continues to mature as he grows.

But the best part is how well Max is doing. He came to see us for his first Cleft Clinic Review Board and absolutely stole the show. He is happy, curious, full of personality, and his speech and language skills are very advanced!

For families at the beginning of their cleft journey, we hope seeing Max provides a little glimpse of what the future can hold.

Back to School with the Spokane Cleft Team!

A new school year is here! For children with cleft lip and palate, heading back to school can sometimes bring a few extra considerations, especially when it comes to speech, hearing, dental care, and feeling confident with friends and classmates.

A few resources that may help families start the year strong:

Share your child’s care needs with their teacher, school nurse, and support team.

If your child has a history of hearing concerns, consider classroom seating where they can easily see and hear the teacher.

Review your child’s IEP or 504 Plan and make sure speech or other needed accommodations are in place.

Keep up with regular dental and orthodontic care throughout the school year.

Encourage your child to talk with a trusted adult if they experience questions, teasing, or bullying related to their cleft or appearance.

Families can also find helpful educational and school resources through the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association and Children’s Craniofacial Association.

July is National Cleft & Craniofacial Awareness Month—a time to celebrate the strength of children with cleft lip, cleft palate, and craniofacial differences, while raising awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and specialized care.

At the Spokane Cleft Team, we're honored to partner with families from the very beginning. Together, we celebrate first smiles, first words, successful surgeries, and every milestone in between.

Deacon and Fox both had their cleft lips reconstructed 3 weeks ago by Dr Gailey. Deacon had a right sided cleft and Fox’s was on his left. Both have healed wonderfully! Deacon has slightly more scar contracture, but will relax over the next several months with wound care and massage. We are so happy for them and their families!
