To every athlete plunging both arms into an ice bucket on a 108° day: we love you. But please — don't.

That relief is a trick your body is playing on you. Ice water on the skin triggers vasoconstriction — a protective reflex that slams your blood vessels shut. And your palms happen to contain the most powerful heat-exchange vessels in your body: specialized structures called AVAs (arteriovenous anastomoses) that can move up to 60% of your cardiac output when you're overheating.

Cool them right, and you cool the core from the inside out. Freeze them, and those vessels close. The radiator goes offline. Your skin feels numb while your core temperature keeps climbing.

The Stanford lab that developed our science nailed the range: cool, not cold. Enough to draw the heat out — not enough to trigger the shutdown.

Three ways to feel cooler. None of them is measured on the number that matters.

A cold towel drops your skin temperature. Your skin isn't what governs output, judgment, or safety — your core temperature is, held near 98.6°F (37°C). Two different numbers, and only one of them decides whether you keep going.

Cool a large area of skin fast and it gets worse. The brain reads your skin as its sensor. Convince it the surface is cold and it concludes the emergency is over — then closes the vessels it had opened to dump heat. In Dr. Craig Heller's words: "instead of increasing your heat loss you're decreasing your heat loss."

The neck settles it. In a 2025 randomized cross-over trial, participants wore an ice collar holding 1.2 kg of ice through 20 minutes of cycling at 95°F (35°C). Core temperature at the end of exercise, measured the way researchers actually measure it:

99.97°F (37.76°C) cooled.
99.97°F (37.76°C) not cooled.

Identical. They reported feeling significantly cooler anyway.

A battery fan moves a fraction of that heat.

The palm is the exception. Its hairless glabrous skin carries vessels built to dump heat — under load it sheds heat more than five times faster than ordinary skin. Cool it in the right range and hot blood gives up its heat there and returns to the core cooler. No false signal. No radiator shut.

Feeling cool is a comfort. Being cool is a capability.

The gear that protects a firefighter also traps the heat that hurts them.

Turnout gear is built to keep external heat out — but it also blocks the body's two main ways of shedding its own heat: moving air across the skin, and evaporating sweat. So the core climbs. In full turnout gear, firefighters average a core temperature of 104.1°F (40.1°C) — well past the 100.4°F (38°C) line occupational safety draws — with heart rates near 182 bpm. And it doesn't stop when the call does: core temperature can keep rising for up to 15 minutes after the gear comes off.

You can't take the protection off on the fireground. But the palm is the body's highest-flow radiator, and it comes out of the glove at every rehab. Cool it, and it pulls heat out of the blood and sends cooler blood back to the core — actively reversing the climb instead of waiting it out.

Keep the protection. Lose the trapped heat.
