Pegasus Physician Writers is pleased to share an upcoming Stanford Arts event led by Dr. Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu, psychologist, author, and longtime Stanford educator whose work explores identity, healing, and resilience.

Kintsugi: The Art of Golden Repair is an interactive workshop exploring the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold-dusted lacquer. More than a restoration technique, kintsugi is a philosophy that embraces imperfection, resilience, and transformation—themes that resonate deeply with medicine, healing, and the creative process.

Participants will have the opportunity to repair a ceramic vessel (either one they bring or one provided) while reflecting on the stories that objects, experiences, and people carry through breakage and repair. No prior experience is necessary.

The workshop is presented in conjunction with 1,000 Ways to Hold, a Stanford Arts exhibition exploring care, connection, and the meaning we assign to the objects that accompany us through life.

Pegasus Physician Writers is thrilled to sponsor a one-year writing residency (following the academic calendar) for two select medical student who practices poetry, fiction, or nonfiction.

Writers interested in the correlation between the language of poetry and the language of science are encouraged to apply. Medical students will be encouraged to take this time to hone their craft and explore the intersection of health and creativity.

During the awarded year, the Writer-In-Residence will work on refining a body of work, with the hope of hosting a reading/performance in the latter half of the academic year.

Additional responsibilities of the Writer-In-Residence include:
1. Recruiting and hosting Oasis, a bi-weekly medical student group (subdivision of Pegasus)
2. Attending monthly Pegasus meetings
3. Helping to coordinate the Irv Yalom literary award, and
4. Organizing the Pegasus Writer-In-Residence program for following years.

Unlike other residency programs, The Pegasus Writer-In-Residence will not provide formal living arrangements, instead, a $250 stipend will be awarded to be used towards writing contests and literary magazine submission fees.

During the 2025-2026 year, the previous Writer-In-Residence, Twan Sia, published poems in Foglifter Journal, New Ohio Review, Sundog Lit, and elsewhere. He was an Edward F. Albee Fellow at The William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center in Montauk, New York, and a Workshop Fellow of Foglifter Journal’s The Yearning Hour. His work was shortlisted for the 2026 Stacy Doris Poetry Memorial Award, named a finalist for the 2026 Ashland Poetry Press Annual Broadside Contest, and a finalist for the Winter 2026 Brooklyn Poets Fellowship.

Applicants should submit a 100 word proposal for what they aim to pursue during the year, as well as a project sample and a bibliography of past creative writing
publications.

The deadline for the 2026-2027 application is July 14, 2026. The residency will commence on August 1, 2026 and run through June 30, 2027. Judges for the selection of the Pegasus Writer-In-Residence will include a Writer-In-Residence from previous years.
