Thought for the week....

1 Peter 5:8-10
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

As Christians, sometimes we have to realize that God lets our enemy try to burn us to show them just how mighty he is 🔥✝️

I can't believe the number of patients that come in and have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's, but have no idea what this means. I also have numerous patients that have no idea they even have Hashimoto's, they just know they have a "thyroid issue" but have never been educated on their autoimmune disorder.

There is so much more to Hashimoto's than just taking a thyroid medication, so let's discuss low dose naltrexone in relation to Hashimoto's and what it does.......

What is Naltrexone?
If you are not familiar with naltrexone, it is an FDA-approved medication that has been used since the 1980s for opioid withdrawal. It is used at a higher, standard dose of 50 mg per day. However, low doses of this medication (hence, low dose naltrexone or LDN) has been found to modulate the immune system and has shown promise in improving cases of autoimmune disease.

LDN is truly an intriguing drug. It can be incredibly helpful for quite a few symptoms that are common for people with Hashimoto’s. Patients are able to reduce their pain, inflammation, decrease their thyroid antibodies significantly, and even lower their thyroid medications with the use of LDN.

Doses of 1.5-4.5 mg per day are usually recommended and have been reported to enhance immune function by increasing the body’s production of endorphins, also known as endogenous endorphin production. This is important for autoimmunity because the increased endorphins help to modulate and regulate the immune system. LDN also reportedly works by reducing inflammation, promoting DNA synthesis, and slowing down motility in the GI tract, to facilitate healing.

To get a little more technical, LDN balances the immune system by increasing the amount of T-regulatory cytokines and modulating TGF-B, leading to a reduction of Th-17, the promoter of autoimmunity. This means that it turns off the cells that cause autoimmunity.

Hormone Facts

Today we are going to take a deeper dive into progesterone and why I give it to all of my menopausal women taking estradiol regardless of the presence of a uterus.

So many times I hear my patients that have come to me from other providers say, "I was told I did not need that since I have had a hysterectomy" 😲

Let me tell you what all progesterone does for your body.......

Yes, if you still have your uterus, it is imperative that you take progesterone due to its uterine protection, but other than that it protects against breast cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, and it has been shown to improve cognitive function and memory, helping prevent dementia, progesterone has also been shown as a proven tool to help manage the symptoms of neuropathy.

Always treat menopause as a progesterone deficient state !!!!

Things you will never see me do in practice...........

You will never see me test your progesterone levels

You will never see me comment or agree with a saliva progesterone test done with another provider, levels do not correlate and are not reliable

You will never see me prescribe transdermal progesterone, systemic absorption is low, and thus dangerous to rely on for treatment purposes, especially in women that have not had a hysterectomy, bad outcomes may result

Education is key 🩺💊

What sets Rhoades Family Practice apart from any other practice is what it was founded on. I had a vision to make a difference in people’s lives.

God opened a door for me to do that, and he has blessed me with the ability to care for patients in a way that other providers often do not understand, but that is what makes my job so amazing !!!

I don’t want to be like anyone else, I want to be who God made me, and I trust him to do the rest. ✝️❤️

Are you being told that hormones are bad for your heart, going to make you have a stroke, blood clots, etc...

Studies have proven that hormones are cardio protective, they relax the cardiac muscle and dilate the blood vessels. They actually protect the heart from ischemic injury.

It is never recommended to discontinue HRT on women, studies have shown that acute withdrawal from estradiol may predispose patients to potentially fatal coronary artery events due to vasoconstriction.

Declining hormone levels may also contribute to and modulate cardiac rhythm, and help prevent long QT intervals.

Androgens have been shown to inhibit inflammatory activation and induction of procoagulant and adhesive properties, they show anti-thrombotic properties, therefore possessing a cardioprotective function.

In other words, testosterone does not increase clotting risk.
Recent studies have shown that low levels of testosterone have been a predisposing factor in and major determinant of CAD and hypertension.

I have said this over and over, but other providers continue to tell patients otherwise, hormones are cardio protective !!!

"I believe the second half of one’s life is meant to be better than the first half. The first half is finding out how you do it. And the second half is not letting anyone tell you that you don't need hormones !!!"

Almost 50 doesn't have to be that bad 💪

Summer is winding down, and weight loss is always on the top of everyones to-do list, I want to take a minute to discuss some of the tips you need to consider while taking weight loss injections.

So many patients ask, " how much weight should I expect to loose each week or month? "

My answer to that is simple, every patient is different, everyone has a different metabolism, etc... but the bottom line is, you get what you put into these injections. All weight loss medications are simply a tool to help you get there. They are not a miracle drug, weight loss takes effort and patience. You did not pack these pounds on overnight, so they will not, and do not need to come off overnight, slow and steady wins the race.

You must increase your metabolism on these injections. Many of my patients have underlying issues, those must be addressed in addition to the obesity issue as well. If we do not correct the root cause of the problem, we are just going to continue to run in circles. You can not ignore midlife metabolism and hormone shifts, they will destroy your weight loss goals !!!

You might ask yourself, what about side effects?
This is why you need a plan, you need to be medically supervised, and you must start low and go slow. Patients always want to be impatient and skip the lower doses, jumping to the higher doses too quickly will result in GI upset. Most commonly nausea, fatigue, abdominal pain, and constipation, just to name a few.

Another important factor is learning how to eat while on these injections. The most common days you will experience side effects is the day of, and the day after the injection. It is imperative that you do not skip protein, and that you hydrate, hydrate, hydrate !!!!!! And avoid heavy, greasy foods. Not only do these injections curb your appetite, they teach you how to eat better.

It is very important to have a clear strategy when deciding to embark on a weight loss journey. If you are wanting to take this journey in 2026, and need medical guidance, give us a call.
