🌞 Warmer weather is here— so is strong UV exposure! 🌞

A few simple habits can help keep kids safe from sunburns while they enjoy the sunshine. 🕶️🏖️
✔️ Apply SPF 15+ sunscreen 15-30 minutes before heading outside
✔️ Reapply every 2 hours (and after swimming!)
✔️ Wear hats, sunglasses, and lightweight protective clothing
✔️ Keep water bottles handy to stay hydrated 💧
✔️ Take shade breaks during the hottest part of the day

☀️ Even one severe sunburn during childhood can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life.

🌿 Tick Season Is Here! 🕷️

As the weather warms up, kids are spending more time outdoors, increasing the risk of tick bites happening! While most tick bites are harmless, some ticks carry illnesses that can be spread to humans through a bite.

The best way to prevent tickborne illness is to reduce exposure to ticks.

✔️ Help prevent tick bites:
• Use child-safe insect repellent
• Wear long sleeves/pants in wooded areas
• Shower after outdoor activities
• Check your pets for tick bites

✔️Places to check after being outside:
• Behind the ears
• Scalp and hairline
• Under arms
• Around the waist and between the begs
• Behind knees

If you find a tick:
✅ Remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers
✅ Clean the area with soap and water
✅ Watch for fever, rash, or flu-like symptoms

If you have concerns about a tick bite or symptoms after one, contact our office — we’re here to help and answer any questions you may have ☀️

🌡️Measles cases are rising in some areas, and it’s a good reminder to make sure your child is protected.

🤒 Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. People are contagious up to 4 days before the rash appears and are still contagious 4 days after it appears.

Children under the age of 5 are at highest risk for severe complications such as:
• Pneumonia
• Brain swelling (encephalitis)
• Severe ear infection and diarrhea
• Permanent hearing loss
• In rare cases, death

The good news: the MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) is safe and highly effective at preventing measles. Children typically receive it at:
✔ 12–15 months
✔ 4–6 years

💉 Vaccinations not only protects your child but also helps protect babies and others who cannot be vaccinated.

If you’re unsure whether your child is up to date on vaccines, we’re happy to help review their record. Call our office to schedule an appointment or ask questions.

Keeping our community healthy starts with prevention 💙

🌟 A quick reminder for our patients and families about our after-hours phone line:

☎ Our office phones turn on and off based on our hours for the day. They turn on at 8 AM Monday through Saturday and our office is not open on Sunday. The regular office phone line is currently not on during our walking hours from 7-8 AM Monday through Friday. If you call 1–2 hours before opening, the call is routed to the provider on call. This line is intended for urgent medical concerns that cannot wait until the office opens.

⏰ For routine questions, appointment requests, medication refills, and other non-urgent concerns, please wait until our office opens to call. This helps ensure the on-call provider remains available for patients who truly need urgent guidance overnight or early in the morning.

❤️ We truly appreciate your help in keeping this line available for urgent needs. Thank you!

It has come to our office's attention that Sunflower Health Plan, a KanCare insurance provider, will no longer be in network with Children's Mercy effective May 31, 2026 unless an agreement is made to prevent this.

What this means for your child if they have Sunflower insurance if the issue is not resolved:

If they are currently being seen by a Children’s Mercy provider, you can call your insurance company and request a change to one of the other Medicaid/KanCare agencies.

If they are not currently receiving any care from Children’s Mercy, you can still call and request to switch insurance agencies in the event they may need specialized care in the future.

At this time, our office does not have a lot of information on what will happen for children who still have Sunflower and need specialized pediatric care after May 31st. The only information we have at this time is that Children’s Mercy will no longer be in network with Sunflower Health Plan after that date unless they two companies come to an agreement and resolve the issue.

If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to call your insurance provider to discuss your options. They will have the most accurate information and guidance to help you.

Little Hearts Matter — Inside and Out 💗

February is a great time to focus on heart health — and that includes emotional health too!

A healthy heart isn’t just about good nutrition and exercise. It’s also about:
❤️ Feeling safe and loved
🧠 Learning how to manage big emotions
😴 Getting enough sleep
🏃 Staying active
🥦 Eating balanced meals

When children feel supported emotionally, their physical health benefits too. Stress, anxiety, and lack of sleep can have long-term effects on growing hearts. Teaching coping skills and encouraging open communication makes a difference.
