🚶 October is National Pedestrian Safety Month—a reminder that safety in every crosswalk can mean the difference between life and death.

On October 19, 2017, Lisa Torry Smith was killed by a driver while walking her 6-year-old son to school in a Texas crosswalk. Her son survived but suffered serious injuries.

The advocacy of Lisa’s family and community led to the passage of the Lisa Torry Smith Act in 2021. Texas law now requires drivers to stop and yield to pedestrians lawfully in an intersection or adjacent crosswalk.

Please slow down, stay alert and always stop and yield at crosswalks. Together, we can honor Lisa’s memory and help ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.

🎃👻 Halloween is full of tricks and treats, but safety shouldn't be the scary part!

Did you know a national study found that children ages 4–8 faced 10 times the risk of being fatally struck by a vehicle on Halloween evening compared to other evenings?

With excited trick-or-treaters filling neighborhood streets, it's important for both parents and drivers to take extra precautions.
In this week's NET Health Minute, we're sharing a few tips to help keep your Halloween celebrations safe and healthy!

🔦 Be Seen: Use reflective tape, glow sticks, or flashlights to help drivers spot trick-or-treaters.
🚸 Stay Alert: Use sidewalks and crosswalks when available, and remind drivers to slow down in neighborhoods.
🍬 Check Your Treats: Inspect candy packaging and watch for potential allergens and choking hazards.
🧟 Keep Spooky Snacks Safe: Refrigerate perishable foods and avoid leaving them out for more than two hours.

Halloween should be filled with fun memories, not preventable accidents or illnesses!
As we recognize National Pedestrian Safety Month this October, let's work together to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
