Finding the Missing Piece!
Sometimes one continuing education course is enough to change the direction of a career. For Sandie Weitemier, BSDH, LDH, COM©, CH-OSE, that moment came when a CE course introduced her to myofunctional therapy. As a full-time clinical hygienist, Sandie began exploring the field and quickly recognized what she describes as a “missing piece” in patient care.
That curiosity led her to pursue the IAOM certification track and ultimately establish Myofunction Junction of Minnesota, where she evaluates and treats abnormal function of the tongue, lips, jaw, and facial muscles.
Today, Sandie is passionate about helping patients improve oral function while looking at the bigger picture-including airway, breathing, swallowing, and whole-person health. She believes dental hygienists have a unique ability to recognize clinical signs that may otherwise be overlooked and to educate and advocate for patients well beyond the traditional operatory.
As both an NNHH student and member, Sandie encourages hygienists to trust their clinical knowledge, stay curious, and be willing to step outside the familiar. Her BHAG (big hairy audacious goal!) is to build strong collaborative relationships with medical providers and ENTs, helping bridge dentistry and medicine so patients with airway concerns and myofunctional disorders receive earlier, more coordinated care.
Something that Sandie said that really resonated with us is this, “...growth rarely happens without taking a chance and and do not underestimate the value you bring.” Inspiring words from this inspiring RDH!
