School may be starting back, but the Dog Days of Summer aren't over yet!
While the next few days may not be as scorching as some of the temperatures we experienced in June and July, it's still important to take precautions to stay safe in the heat.
Beat the Heat Tips:
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
• If you're outdoors, take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned space.
• Reduce strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day.
• If you take medications for high blood pressure, migraines, allergies, muscle spasms, mental illness, or other conditions, talk with your doctor about how heat may affect you.
• Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone who may be at higher risk. If you work outside, check on your coworkers too.
• Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle—not even for a minute. Temperatures inside a car can become deadly in just minutes.
Know the signs of heat-related illness:
Muscle cramps, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, fainting, headaches, nausea, and vomiting can all be warning signs. If someone is experiencing these symptoms, move them to a cool place, give them water if they are able to drink, apply cool cloths, and seek medical attention if needed.
Those most at risk include young children, adults 65 and older, people without air conditioning, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
Need a place to cool off?
The City of Winston-Salem has opened its Recreation Centers as Cooling Centers, and Forsyth County Public Library branches are open throughout the summer as another cool place to escape the heat.
