Community Spotlight: Turning Challenge Into Connection
At just two weeks old, Liliana was found to have abnormal platelet levels, leading to the diagnosis of a rare genetic platelet bleeding disorder after months of hospitalization and genetic testing. Soon after, Liliana’s mother, Jill, connected with the Bleeding Disorders Foundation of Florida in search of help, answers, and support as their family adjusted to a new way of life. Reflecting on that time, Jill shared, “When Liliana was first diagnosed, we felt incredibly isolated. It was overwhelming.”
Through attending programs and community walks, Jill and her family found comfort in connecting with others facing similar challenges. Meeting families who understood their experiences meant the world to them and reminded them they were not alone. They discovered a supportive community they could lean on, share with, and grow alongside. These opportunities not only strengthened their connection to the bleeding disorders community, but also brought their family closer together, uniting them throughout Liliana’s journey.
When asked what advice she would give to new families, Jill shared, “Don’t try to do this alone. Reaching out was one of the best decisions we made for our family.”
Since Liliana’s diagnosis, Jill and her family have become active and valued members of the community, always showing up with smiles, compassion, and a willingness to advocate for other families whenever they can. The support they received during their earliest days in the community is something Jill now hopes to give back to others navigating similar experiences.
Thank you, Jill, for everything you do!
