In My Rose Garden is an uplifting blog to encourage and inspire people who have gone through serious medical procedures, such as amputation, mastectomy or lumpectomy, and life-changing diagnoses, such as cancer or strokes. Dr Barbara Louw uses the beautiful metaphor of the rose garden as a space of beauty, growth and shared experiences. Roses are symbols of beauty and resilience, as they bloom amidst thorns. We can thrive in this space despite life's challenges and trauma when we find beauty and a reliable place to. This is a safe space for sharing challenging and painful experiences. Like a well-tended rose garden, this is a welcoming, nurturing environment where you will find support and hope. Here we can grow and be transformed like roses and embrace the personal growth that occurs in the face of adversity. We share resilience and triumph while highlighting how challenges can ultimately lead to growth and strength. In this garden, there is the gorgeous aroma of hope and optimism, like the fragrance of roses. She shares stories and insights that inspire hope and resilience, infusing this blog with the uplifting scent of possibility and renewal. Just like everyone's journey is unique and valuable, the diversity and variety found in a rose garden reflect our diverse experiences and perspectives. Just as a rose garden requires regular care and attention, the importance of self-care and wellness practices in maintaining resilience and well-being is part of cultivating wellness through this blog. She offers tips and resources for nurturing physical, emotional, social and spiritual health. Together we will celebrate the different seasons of life and navigate the periods of change, just like the seasons in a rose garden. We will welcome the fullness of life and it’s ebbs and flows, offering guidance for navigating the inevitable changes with grace and resilience. "In My Rose Garden" blog acknowledges the challenges of life and celebrates the beauty, growth, and resilience that can be found amidst them. Since this is a very sensitive field and you might be in a vulnerable space, Dr Barbara Louw will offer her counselling services.

Have you ever opened a book, read the same paragraph three times, and eventually closed it in frustration? Perhaps you have wondered why you struggle to concentrate when other people seem to read with ease. You might even have told yourself, “I’m just not a reader.”

But what if the problem is not what you think?

Growing Older Should Never Mean Being Left Behind

Why more South African seniors are struggling to access the healthcare they need most

Honouring a Lifetime: Why Healthcare Should Not Become a Luxury in Retirement

“Getting older is a natural journey of being treated with respect and shouldn't be a luxury.”

South Africa is ageing, much like many other countries around the world. According to Statistics South Africa, the number of people aged 60 and older has grown from 3.6 million in 2002 to 6.6 million in 2025, representing 10.5% of the population. This percentage is expected to continue rising as South Africans live longer and healthier lives.

I have relaunched my author newsletter, Dr Barbara Bulletin, and I would love to invite you to join me.

It is a space where I will share new book updates, behind-the-scenes glimpses of my writing, personal reflections, practical guides, upcoming online workshops and occasional little gifts along the way.

At the heart of it is something very close to my own work and calling: to honour each reader's unique story and awaken a profound sense of meaning and purpose.

My Healing Persona Series is currently at the forefront of my writing, so there will be plenty to share as the books are published in stages.

No pressure, no noise — just a space for thoughtful ideas, meaningful questions and the journey towards wholeness. 💛
I would be delighted to have you there.

Have you ever noticed how little we talk about the emotional impact of serious illness, surgery, or life-changing medical diagnoses?

We discuss treatments, procedures, and recovery, but often remain silent about the fear, grief, identity changes, and relationship challenges that can follow.

I recently wrote an article, Beyond the Diagnosis: Breaking the Silence Around Medical Trauma, to begin an important conversation about what many people experience but few feel able to discuss.

If you or someone you love has faced cancer, stroke, amputation, major surgery, or another significant medical challenge, I invite you to read and share the article.

Together, we can create more understanding, compassion, and hope.

Wellness is not simply about surviving a procedure or completing a treatment plan. True healing involves addressing the whole person and recognising the impact that medical trauma can have on every dimension of life. It requires space for honest conversations, support, and emotional processing.

Being understood can be more healing than being fixed.

Being understood can be more healing than being fixed.

Not every wound needs quick advice.
Not every struggle needs immediate fixing.
Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer another person is the quiet assurance that they are safe to be heard.
When people are rushed towards solutions before they have processed their pain, they can walk away feeling invisible rather than supported. True understanding takes patience. It allows space for reflection, honesty, and emotional safety.
In that space, people often discover their own strength, insight, and next steps.
Healing is not always found in quick answers. Very often, it begins in moments of compassionate listening and human connection.
