We are seeking a full-time 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿, WA Centre for Rural Health (WACRH) of The University of Western Australia at our Geraldton site.

Lead one of Australia's largest and most respected University Departments of Rural Health.

The Director provides strategic, academic and operational leadership for WACRH. The role fosters excellence in rural, remote and Aboriginal health research, teaching, workforce development, policy contribution and community engagement across the University and with external partners.

We had a fantastic turnout at last week’s Student Interprofessional Learning Session, The Pharmacist’s Role in Collaborative Care, facilitated by Curtin University pharmacy students Ashley, Kate, Ciara and Loren.

More than 30 students attended in Geraldton, with others joining via MS Teams from Carnarvon, Mount Magnet and Roebourne. Students from occupational therapy, pharmacy, dietetics, medical science, social work, speech pathology, optometry and physiotherapy came together to learn, collaborate and strengthen their confidence working across disciplines.

The WA Centre for Rural Health presented at the Rural Health West Aboriginal Health Conference in Boorloo (Perth). Associate Professor Ivan Lin, Lecturer Lenny Papertalk presented ‘Clinical Yarning: A person-centred communication framework for Aboriginal healthcare’, an interactive workshop exploring practical communication tools to support culturally safe, person-centred care for Aboriginal people. Research Officer Emma Taylor facilitated ‘Cancer campaigns and resources: What works, what’s missing, and what comes next’, sharing findings from a recent review of cancer education initiatives and engaging participants in discussions about creating meaningful, culturally safe and actionable cancer messages for Aboriginal communities.

Reflecting on the conference, Emma said: “It was wonderful to hear from so many inspiring speakers about the work they are doing to improve the health and wellbeing of their communities.” Emma also highlighted the opportunity to learn from keynote speakers and fellow presenters, and to connect in person with colleagues and community members.

Last week, we hosted our quarterly Speech Pathology networking gathering in Geraldton, bringing together both familiar and new faces, including local speech pathologists, new staff members and students on rural placement. Attendees represented a range of settings across the region, including public and private practice, primary schools, Aboriginal Medical Services and the university sector.

These gatherings provide a valuable opportunity to connect, share experiences and strengthen professional relationships across the rural health workforce. While conversations highlighted the diversity of speech pathology practice in the Midwest, there was one thing everyone agreed on: Geraldton is a fantastic place to live, work and build a career.

Last week, Associate Professor Ivan Lin and Aboriginal Researcher and Midwest Clinical Yarning cultural lead Kelsie Crowe travelled to Grafton and Coffs Harbour, NSW, to deliver Clinical Yarning workshops to allied health teams. Organised by Gumbaynggirr physiotherapist Jane Linton, the workshops were funded through a professional development grant from the NSW Health Education and Training Institute, enabling NSW Health staff to participate in this valuable learning opportunity.

Participant feedback highlighted the practical impact of the workshops. Naomi Simick Behera, Physiotherapist and Acting Coordinator of the Knee and Hip Osteoarthritis Program at Port Macquarie Base Hospital, shared her biggest takeaway: “The importance of social yarning in building trust and rapport and feeling more confident in providing culturally safe and appropriate care.”

A rural placement supported by the WA Centre for Rural Health of The University of Western Australia has helped nursing student Sarah Griffith take the next step toward her career, accepting a position with Carnarvon Medical Centre after completing her placement. Her experience shows how rural placements can inspire students to live and work in regional communities while contributing to a stronger local health workforce.

Through strong partnerships with health services across the Midwest, Gascoyne and Pilbara, WACRH placements give students the opportunity to develop skills, build professional connections and experience the rewards of rural healthcare firsthand. Outcomes like Sarah's demonstrate the important role rural placements play in attracting and retaining health professionals in regional Western Australia.
