I’ve been seeing a lot of posts lately about the length of time you actually massage a client for when they book an hour session.

When I first started working 20 years ago at a busy clinic they booked us 3 clients back to back then a 30 mins break then 3 more back to back. Due to the pre-treatment chat and post-treatment chat and clean up I was always running late by the third client and it drove me nuts! I also knew that it was really poor customer service. I value everyone’s time.

When I went out on my own I started leaving 15 mins between each session and man did it work better for me. I could give each client the proper attention before and after with a little time to take a bite of a sandwich and water.

So here is how an hour session works with me now…

Client books a 12pm and shows up at 12pm ( as most do).

We chat for a few minutes. I leave to let them get ready. I go wash my hands.

I enter the room at 12:05pm. ALWAYS look at your clock when you enter your room.

End the hour treatment at 12:05pm.

For me, my hour starts when I enter the room.

I have had hundreds of clients say how much they appreciate that I give them the time they pay for because many don’t.

This is just my way and it doesn’t have to be yours❤️

Another Secret to Treating the Adductors….

have you male clients wear shorts.

99% of my male clients wear shorts on the table and I use a towel to create my drape.

This makes it SO much easier to create a clean and secure line.

PS. It’s also way easier when you’re having to move their leg around🙌

Medial knee pain isn’t always a knee problem.

So often, we focus all our attention on the knee and forget to look up the chain. Tight, weak, or dysfunctional adductors can create significant tension and altered mechanics that contribute to pain along the inside of the knee.

If you’re only treating the site of pain, you might be missing the root cause.

As RMTs, it’s so important to assess and treat the adductors when appropriate. A thorough understanding of this muscle group can make a huge difference in your clients’ outcomes and your confidence as a therapist.

Don’t forget to look beyond the knee. Sometimes the answer is hiding in the thigh😀

A great example of building confidence and trust with a client and it was at my own expense….

A client came in looking for a post-race flush and commented on his right Achilles tendon being a little sore.

When it was time to get into the calves and Achilles I all of a sudden had a brain fart and couldn’t remember which Achilles he said hurt…right or left?!

Instead of just guessing and treating the wrong one, I paused and said,
“ oh my goodness, was it your right or left Achilles that was sore? I so sorry I’m having a brain fart.”

He laughed and said it was the right one, which was the one I was treating👍

I think admitting when you don’t know or can’t remember or make a mistake is a great way of building confidence and showing integrity as a person and a therapist.

One of my Secrets to Treating the Adductors….

Have your client help you with draping.

This was not taught in school and heck, it might be frowned upon by most, BUT I will say that asking for help to ensure your client feels comfortable is a good thing!

By letting them choose where they are comfortable shows your level of care.

And it demonstrates my confidence as a therapist which is the biggest step you can take when building a long lasting relationship with a client.

How it works….

After explaining why you need to treat the adductors and ensuring they are on board and comfortable simply do your draping then ask them to adjust it as needed then put your final touches on it to ensure it is secure.

Easy peasy and it makes both of you more comfortable when treating a sensitive area🙌

This is the BEST stretch to separate the hamstrings from the adductors.

It is very common for these two muscle groups to get stuck together which means neither of them are working properly which means injury will likely occur in either the muscles themselves or the joints they impact.

V Wall Sit is an incredible effective, easy way for your client to work on separating these two muscle groups between sessions.

If you have clients who have desk jobs and basically compress and shorten their hamstrings and adductors all day long this one is for you!

If you have clients who are runners, cyclists, hockey players or play pickleball….do we call them pickleballers😝 …..anyways….This one is for you!
