In several species of nursery web spiders and gift giving spiders, males present females with a prey item wrapped in silk before mating. Scientists call these "nuptial gifts."
The gift serves two purposes. First, it provides the female with food, which can improve her reproductive success.
Second, it keeps her occupied. While she focuses on unwrapping and eating the gift, the male has a safer opportunity to mate without being attacked or chased away.
Not all males are equally generous.
Researchers have found that some males cheat by wrapping worthless objects such as plant fragments, empty insect shells, or small stones in silk.
From the outside, the fake gift looks just as appealing as a genuine meal.
The deception often works, at least initially. The female may begin inspecting the package while the male mates with her.
However, if she discovers the trick too quickly, the mating can be cut short, reducing the male's chances of passing on his genes.
