Back to school means new routines, new classrooms and, for many families, a renewed need for reliable access to healthy food.

At the SOS Medical Foundation, we know that a child’s health and ability to learn are closely connected. Kids need nutritious food to grow, focus and thrive.

So today, we want to recognize some of the incredible organizations, volunteers and community groups working across the South Okanagan Similkameen to help make sure local children have enough to eat.

• The Feedway Foundation Breakfast Club, providing nutritious breakfasts to more than 1,000 local students. We’re also proud to partner with Feedway for our upcoming Canadian Tire Drive Thru Breakfast on September 17!

• Starfish Pack programs in Penticton and the Similkameen, and Penny Lane Packs in Summerland, helping provide nutritious, easy-to-prepare food for children over the weekend.

• Local food banks and resource centres across the region, supporting families with emergency food hampers and programs such as After the Bell.

• All the parents, caregivers, teachers and volunteers who help keep these programs going across the region. It would not be possible without you.

Healthy communities are built together. To everyone packing bags, preparing breakfasts, volunteering, donating and helping local families, thank you for supporting the health and well-being of children across our region.

Wishing students, families, teachers and school staff a healthy and happy school year.

Sometimes healthcare is about incredible technology, new equipment and big projects.

And sometimes, it’s simply about knowing that when you or someone you love needs care, your community has helped make sure it’s there.

Every donation. Every breakfast bought. Every event attended. Every post shared. Every local business that steps up.

It all adds up to better healthcare, right here at home.

And we think that’s something pretty special about this community.

Thank you for being part of it. ❤️

We were honoured to receive a generous $10,000 donation from longtime Penticton resident, Gurmel Sidhu.

After moving to Penticton in the 1970s, Gurmel has spent more than 50 years building his life in this community and is deeply grateful for the care he has received at Penticton Regional Hospital over the years.

Wanting to give back as part of his legacy, Gurmel directed his gift to the Foundation's area of greatest need, allowing it to support the hospital's highest priorities. His donation will also contribute to the Foundation's efforts to bring a Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System to PRH, helping expand access to advanced surgical care for patients across the South Okanagan Similkameen.

Supporting his hospital is Gurmel's way of saying thank you and helping ensure others can continue to receive excellent care close to home.

Thank you, Gurmel, for your generosity and for investing in the future of healthcare in our community. 💙

On Friday, August 7th, our community was greatly affected by the start of the Bald Range wildfire in Summerland.

Doctors arrived at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre, where an evacuation centre had been established, to help those requiring medical assistance. It quickly became apparent that there was a significant need for a bronchodilator, commonly known as a rescue inhaler, among individuals whose breathing was being affected by the wildfire smoke. In that first weekend alone, 50 rescue inhalers were provided to those in need.

Recognizing this need, Amanda McConnell and Dr. Teresa Rodriguez from the Respiratory Department at the Penticton Regional Hospital worked together to coordinate a solution. With the support of the SOS Medical Foundation, a donation of 100 rescue inhalers from GSK was secured.

These 100 units will be made available at the discretion of a practitioner (Physician, NP) at the Penticton Urgent and Primary Care Centre, located at Unit 101 - 437 Martin St, to anyone in our community who has been affected by the wildfire smoke and requires Ventolin.

This donation will help ensure that people who are experiencing breathing difficulties due to the smoke can access the medication they need during this challenging time.

Today is National Non-Profit Day, and we want to dedicate this moment to the remarkable organizations, community groups, churches and volunteers operating across Penticton, Summerland, and the entire Okanagan right now.

The Bald Range Fire has turned so many lives upside down, but the coordinated and immediate response from local community groups has been breathtaking to witness.

People are stepping up in ways that are hard to put into words.

There are groups working around the clock right now to make sure evacuated families have hot meals, fresh clothes, and a safe place to land. There are teams providing trauma support for those who have lost so much, and volunteers scrambling into difficult situations to rescue and shelter terrified animals and livestock.

To the organizations donating food, feeding the families, sorting the donations, and driving the trailers, thank you. To the people being a steady shoulder to lean on in the middle of all this chaos, thank you.

You are doing the heavy lifting in the most heartbreaking of circumstances. From everyone here at the SOS Medical Foundation, we are incredibly grateful for the network of non-profits, local groups, and volunteers out there in the thick of it.

We are honoured to be part of this community alongside you.
