Who’s Liable? Legal Essentials for Artists Hosting Public Events

Hosting a workshop, open studio, or outdoor art event can be a great way to build an audience. But it’s also an easy way to expose yourself to legal risk you may not have considered. When a guest trips on a cord, a participant burns their hand on a kiln, or a gust of wind sends your display flying, who’s liable?

This session will break down liability risks artists face when inviting the public into their studios, booths, and outdoor spaces, and will outline the practical steps artists can take before anyone walks through the door. What do general liability and event insurance actually cover? When does a waiver hold up and when is it just paper? What should artists look for in venue contracts? What precautions can artists take to reduce risk? Join us to find out, and to help prevent a claim from ever starting.

Bring your questions for the Q&A period. ⁉️

⏰September 24th at 12:00-1:00 PM ET

📍Online Workshop via ZOOM

In partnership with Artists’ Legal Advice Services (ALAS), The Artists’ Health Centre is pleased to host this Q&A session for artists of all disciplines to ask legal questions about hosting public events.

About the Speaker:

Lewis Waring is an experienced lawyer with a passion for culture. Lewis takes a practical approach shaped by his work on construction and banking matters, and has a growing interest in entertainment law and legal issues affecting artists.

✨ Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Youth Workshop Series: Your Art, Your Story! 🎨💫

Through zine making, mask making, and collaborative sculpture building, youth artists ages 12–17 explored social connection in the modern age and reflected on identity, belonging, self expression, community, and what it means to connect with ourselves, each other, and the world around us. 🌐🤝

Our mask making workshop invited participants to explore how they experience and express themselves with others. Through colours, symbols, words, images, and abstract forms, each artist created a mask reflecting the different ways we present ourselves to the world and the parts of ourselves that may exist beneath the surface. 🎭✨

A special thank you to Jennifer Fader, RP, Registered Psychotherapist & Expressive Arts Therapist, for representing the Artists’ Health Centre and supporting this meaningful creative exploration.

We are incredibly grateful to Linda Wu, founder of ThriveTogether, for her collaboration in bringing this workshop series to life and for creating a space where youth could explore connection, identity, and self expression through the arts. 💛🎨

Reflecting on the experience, Jennifer shared that “participants expressed they enjoyed learning to create in a process oriented way that wasn’t just about making something that looked good or for grades!”

Thank you to all of the young artists who joined us throughout the Youth Workshop Series. Your creativity, perspectives, curiosity, and willingness to explore big questions about connection and identity made this series so special. 🙌

We can’t wait to see how your zines, masks, and collaborative sculptures come together in the October community art exhibit, celebrating youth perspectives and the many different ways we experience and create connection. ✨

We are pleased to announce our upcoming physician takeover featuring Dr. Yu Fei Xia (she/her), a GP psychotherapist passionate about providing OHIP-covered group and individual psychotherapy for artists through the ups and downs of their lives and careers.

Dr. Xia’s work focuses on creating a safe and supportive space for artists to explore:

• Mindfulness and self-compassion
• Worry, self-doubt, and overwhelming emotions
• Mental health through the ups and downs of artistic careers
• Support during and after experiences with cancer

Her counselling approach is informed by modalities including CBT, IPT, and AEDP. With medical training from McMaster University and residency and fellowship training at the University of Toronto, Dr. Xia has also explored the ways in which the arts and medicine can enhance one another through projects presented nationally and at international Health Humanities conferences.

Stay tuned for her takeover on Tuesday, where she will share highlights from her day and provide a glimpse into her work supporting artists’ mental health and wellbeing!😊🌿
