There’s a reason why SwitchRx has almost 140,000 users over all over the World: drug companies have not typically done medication switching studies. It’s not really in their benefit a lot of the time, so we don’t have a lot of science to look at, as far as empirical research that says this is how you do a medication switch or this is why a medication switch works.

I said, “Let me tell you about the patient you are switching to aripiprazole. Those patients have been previously on antipsychotics; you were D2 blocking them for many years, and then all of a sudden you thought you could just stop it and start a partial agonist, and then the lights started to turn on.”

We’re trying to marry the pharmacology and the pharmacokinetics with the clinical lens of how these drugs work in a clinician’s hands and how patients experience them. Sometimes receptor pharmacology does not match clinical outcomes.
