Google “A man in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., is attempting to create an alternative for patients seeking medical assistance in dying (MAID) — particularly those who live with disabilities or have substandard housing.”
“Eric Holmes is the founder of Right to Live Canada, a start-up corporation that’s raising money to provide “competitive options for a liveable future” to applicants seeking medically-assisted death.
A former software developer, Holmes said he believes there are several cases in Canada where MAID could have been avoided if the patients had better housing or financial options.
He pointed to one case, reported by CTV, of a 51-year-old woman who went through with MAID in 2022 after failing to secure affordable housing that would not trigger her medical condition.
While he’s not completely against assisted death, Holmes said if it's the only option on the table, it's no longer a choice.
“We’re developing a first resource for what I call economic euthanasia, where someone would have a case for euthanasia and proceeded due to that economic gap,” he said.”
