Simaril Inc.

first became incorporated in 1986, but it wasn’t until 1987 that Simaril first opened its doors. Simaril was created as part of the Welcome Home Program which was developed to assist people living at the Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC) in Portage La Prairie to move into their own homes in St. Vital during February of this year. All services offered by Simaril are based on the needs, strengths

and accomplishments of each person being supported. Simaril currently supports to people in two areas:

• Community Residential Support: this support is 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

• Supported Independent Living: this support is customized to each individual in that program and support hours are based on the requirements of each individual.

Sunshine, soccer, and good company.

This week, a group of people supported by Simaril got together for an evening of soccer at the park.

There was lots of running, lots of laughs, a few water breaks, and some surprisingly competitive soccer. Most importantly, everyone showed up ready to have fun.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined and to the staff who helped make it happen. The energy, encouragement, and teamwork made all the difference.

Safe to say this won't be the last recreation meet-up of the summer!

🌱 Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

Yesterday, members of Simaril's CARE Committee headed outside to clean up the area around our office and nearby streets.

The committee is made up of both people supported and staff, and everyone worked together to help make our neighbourhood a little cleaner and more welcoming.

A few bags of litter, lots of teamwork, and a beautiful afternoon spent giving back to the community.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made our community a little brighter. 💚

People in Simaril

Meet Abi Adio, Community Manager at Simaril 💙

For Abi, no two days are ever the same.

Her role may involve providing direct hands-on support in the home, guiding staff teams, attending meetings and appointments, or helping individuals explore activities and experiences in the community.

What she enjoys most is “having the privilege to be a part of other people’s lives when it matters the most.”

Abi says the work constantly challenges her to think broadly, think outside the box, and create meaningful experiences for the people she supports.

“Things are always evolving; this keeps me active and alert. I love it!”

She also shared that many people may not realize how hands-on the Community Manager role truly is.

For Abi, this work is deeply personal:

“This work supports my value and allows me to be me. I am working and living at the same time.”

At Simaril, it’s the people, relationships, and everyday moments that make the biggest impact.

Last night, Simaril CEO Jeff Daly attended the 52nd Annual Rady JCC Ken Kronson Sports Dinner.

The event brought together community leaders, organizations, and supporters from across Winnipeg for an evening of connection and celebration.

We are grateful to Blair Worb for the invitation and to the organizers for hosting another successful event.

Opportunities like these help strengthen relationships, build new connections, and keep Simaril engaged in the broader community.

Thank you for a wonderful evening.

At Simaril, it’s often the small everyday things that make a difference.

Christian and Avanthi have been busy planting flowers and adding some greenery around our homes for the summer.

A lot of time, work, and care went into this, and it really shows. The homes look brighter, more welcoming, and full of life.

Thank you both for the pride and care you continue to bring into our homes and communities.

A Day in Simaril

Meet Kris Carino, House Leader at Blenheim.

A typical day in Kris’s role involves balancing direct support, advocacy, and the day-to-day coordination needed to make the house run smoothly.

Her day often starts by catching up on correspondence and making KR her tea and snack. After program, the evening might include medications, errands, appointments, community outings, or a stop at Tim Hortons for hot chocolate and Timbits.

“KR is the boss,” Kris says.

KR has a very playful and mischievous personality, so there is always lots of laughter throughout the evening. She enjoys spending time on her iPad, bouncing on her exercise ball, and keeping staff on their toes with jokes and little pranks.

Kris shared that one thing people may not realize about this role is how much relationship-building is involved in the work.

“It’s the small everyday moments, consistency, and trust that make the biggest difference in a person’s life.”

For Kris, this work is a constant reminder of how important laughter, patience, and human connection are in everyday life 💙

May 5 is Red Dress Day

At Simaril, we recognize the importance of today.

We honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and stand in solidarity with their families and communities.

Red Dress Day is a powerful reminder of lives lost and the ongoing need for awareness, justice, and change.

We remember. We stand together. We call for justice.
