Here’s what I’d do if I wanted to overcome chronic pain. 1. Understand how pain works. It might surprise you and this understanding can actually turn down the pain dial. 2. Become a pro at learning how to relax your body. Pain makes us tense up, a lot. This gives more pain, more tension, and repeat. You can break the cycle. 3. Figure out some safe movement you can do today, the ‘Goldilocks’ amount. Keep doing that, watch yourself get stronger. 4. Give yourself a break, beating yourself up only makes pain worse. 5. But also hold yourself accountable; you can recover or improve.

If pacing alone was the answer, it would have worked by now. The missing piece is understanding what drives your decisions around pacing, the pull between pressure and fear. We make that part of the conversation in our programme, so not only do you know how to pace, you understand the hidden factors underneath it which can make it so hard to implement.

There’s a drug cabinet in your brain, but the body has to feel safe to open it.
The brain decides when pain is made, and decides when it’s ok to open the drug cabinet. The key is helping your body feel safe enough to open it.
