GLP-1 medications have transformed the treatment of obesity and can be a highly effective tool for weight management and improving metabolic health.

But medication is only one part of the picture.

As appetite and food intake decrease, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that nutritional needs are still being met. Adequate protein, nutrient-dense foods, fibre and hydration all matter - particularly when the goal is to lose body fat while preserving muscle mass and supporting overall health.

Exercise is equally important. Resistance training can help preserve muscle and strength during weight loss, while cardiovascular exercise supports heart health, insulin sensitivity and cardiorespiratory fitness.

At Vellio Health, we work alongside medical treatment to support clients using GLP-1 medications with personalised nutrition, exercise and lifestyle strategies - informed by body composition, metabolic and cardiorespiratory fitness assessments.

Because successful weight management isn’t just about losing weight.

It’s about improving your health while you do it.

GLP-1 medications should be prescribed and monitored by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Can you actually “speed up” your metabolism?

The idea of “boosting” metabolism is everywhere - usually linked to a particular food, supplement or exercise.

In reality, there is no single intervention that suddenly turns a “slow” metabolism into a “fast” one.

But there are factors we can influence.

Building and maintaining muscle mass, eating adequate protein, maintaining a healthy body weight, moving regularly throughout the day, avoiding prolonged restrictive dieting and getting enough sleep can all play a role in supporting energy expenditure and metabolic health.

One of the most important components is resting metabolic rate (RMR) - the energy your body requires at rest to maintain normal physiological function.

RMR is influenced by several factors, including body size, body composition, age and s*x, and can vary considerably between individuals.

This is why understanding your own physiology can be more useful than following generic calorie targets or looking for ways to “boost” metabolism.

At Vellio Health, we measure RMR using indirect calorimetry alongside body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness, and use the results to guide individual nutrition, exercise and lifestyle recommendations.

We have our teeth checked regularly.
We have our eyes tested.
We service our cars every year.

So why do we often wait until something feels wrong before checking our cardiometabolic health?

There are a few numbers I believe everyone should know and, more importantly, understand and track over time.

But simply having the tests isn’t enough.

You should know what your numbers mean, how they are changing, and what you can do to improve them.

Nutrition, physical activity, aerobic fitness, strength training, sleep, stress management and other lifestyle factors can influence many of these markers.

And that’s the real value of testing regularly: not collecting more health data, but using it to make better decisions and seeing whether those decisions are actually working.

Know your numbers. Understand them. Improve them.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, yet much of the risk can be identified and modifiedlong before symptoms develop.

Optimising these markers through nutrition, regular exercise, quality sleep and healthy lifestyle habits can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease by up to 70–80%, according to large population studies of ideal cardiovascular health.

Know your numbers. Improve your health. Protect your future

Why is there still such a huge gap in preventive health?

Most common chronic diseases (Cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, Liver disease, Chronic kidney disease..) develop silently over years, sometimes decades, before symptoms appear.

Our body is highly adaptive. It compensates for reduced function and physiological changes remarkably well, often masking problems until disease is already well established.

This is why early screening is so important:
• Blood pressure
• Blood markers
• Resting ECG
• Body composition
• Metabolic functions
• Cardio-respiratory fitness (VO2 max)

Regular health checks can identify risk factors and early dysfunction long before symptoms develop, creating an opportunity for earlier intervention and better long-term outcomes.

Shifting healthcare from reactive treatment to proactive prevention is essential if we want to reduce the burden of chronic disease, lower preventable deaths, and improve quality of life.

Prevention starts long before disease becomes visible and in many cases, it can save lives.
