A huge congratulations to Jessica who took on the 2026 Royal Parks Half Marathon to raise money for Kent Association for the Blind. She tells us "It was amazing! The run was so beautiful and the crowds were exceptional! Was emotional seeing everyone running for such wonderful causes too!"

Not only did Jessica complete the half in a fantastic time (2:10), she has also raised £837.50 towards our vital services...and all whilst celebrating her Birthday! Thank you so much Jessica for helping to make a difference, once again, to help people with a sight impairment across Kent.

Most of us can pick up a tin or a packet and know what it is. Many people who are blind and partially sighted can't. Medicines have carried braille for years. Wouldn't it be great if we had the same for food, alongside a QR code or NaviLens that gives the full information? Sight Scotland and its partners has launched a UK-wide survey asking people who are blind and partially sighted about the accessibility of food packaging and labelling. Today is International White Cane Safety Day! Today we should all celebrate and acknowledge how the cane empowers people of all ages to become more independent. Using a cane allows people who have a sight impairment to confidently detect obstacles in their environment, meaning they can navigate and travel independently.

At KAB, we strive to support people of all different ages and levels of sight to learn how to use the cane correctly and safely, equipping them with the necessary skills to travel independently.

Mobility training like this can be particularly helpful for young children, as it allows them to build skills as they grow and take part in the world around them. Elodie, who is only three years old (soon to be four!), has regular training sessions where she becomes familiar with using the cane and learns how to safely move around. In a recent session with our Mobility Instructor Nicola, Elodie was eager to use her cane on the ramps in the empty skatepark. This allowed her to get a feel for the different types of terrain and she loved it.

Congratulations to our super volunteer befriender, Daryl, who was a finalist in the befriender category at our Heart of KAB Awards. We finally caught up with Daryl to present her with the award, during the art group in Gravesend.

Daryl has been volunteering for 12 years now, generously giving her time to brighten the lives of others. She regularly visits and man in his nineties, and as his family lives hundreds of miles away, she provides not only companionship, but genuine friendship.

Not only is Daryl a befriender, she also supports two social groups and manages around 40 collection tin sites - helping us to raise vital funds within our communities.

Congratulations Daryl - you're truly wonderful!
