❖ Q: Are sins multiplied during the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah just as the reward is multiplied?
A: Yes. Just as the reward for righteous deeds is multiplied during these blessed days, sins are also more severe and grave with Allah.
These are the greatest days of the year, and Dhul Hijjah is also one of the four sacred months.
Allah said:
“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein…”
— [Surah At-Tawbah, 36]
• “…wrong not yourselves therein” means that sins committed during the sacred months are even more serious and severe.
❖ Virtues of the First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah
• The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.”
The companions asked: “Not even striving/fighting in the path of Allah?”
He ﷺ replied:
“Not even striving/fighting in the path of Allah, except for a man who went out with his life and wealth and returned with nothing.”
— Bukhārī
• The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There are no days greater in the sight of Allah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so increase in them your declaration of Tawḥīd (Lā ilāha illa Allāh), your Takbīr (Allāhu Akbar), and your Taḥmīd (Alḥamdulillāh).”
— Musnad Aḥmad
“There are four things the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never abandoned: fasting ‘Āshūrā’, the ten days (of Dhul Hijjah), three days of every month, and two rak‘ah before Fajr.”
— Sunan an-Nasā’ī
❖ Regarding the Day of ‘Arafah:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of ‘Arafah.”
— Muslim
Allah said:
“By the dawn; By the ten nights.”
— [Surah Al-Fajr, 1-2]
• The Salaf said these “ten nights” refer to the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.
• Allah took an oath by them highlighting its importance.
❖ So increase in:
• Tawbah & Istighfār
• Ṣalāh & Qur’an
• Dhikr & Takbīr
• Fasting
• Charity
• Good deeds
And stay far away from:
• Sins
• Backbiting
• Music
• Free-mixing
• Looking at ḥarām
• Wasting time
Because just as rewards are multiplied in these blessed days, sins are also more severe.
So turn back to Allah with sincere Tawbah and abundant Istighfār. Ask Allah for forgiveness constantly, for He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving.
Make sincere repentance with:
• Regret for your sins
• Immediately leaving the sin
• A firm determination never to return to it
Allah said:
“Say: ‘O ‘Ibādi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’”
— [Surah Az-Zumar, 53]
No matter how many sins a person has committed, Allah forgives all sins when the servant sincerely turns to Him upon these conditions. Every son of Adam sins, the best of them are those who repent. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم admonished Mu’adh رضي الله عنه and said to him: “Fear Allah wherever you are and follow a bad deed with a good one, it will wipe it out…”
“And perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night [i.e. the five compulsory Salat (prayers)]. Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds (i.e. small sins). That is a reminder (an advice) for the mindful (those who accept advice).”
