The Virtues of the Day of ʿArafah

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“The Day of ʿArafah possesses numerous virtues:

From them: that it is the day of the perfection of the religion and the completion of the favor.

And from them: that it is an ʿĪd for the people of Islam… however, it is specifically an ʿĪd for the people standing at ʿArafah.

And from them: that it has been said that it is the even-numbered day (al-shafʿ) by which Allah swore in His Book, and that the odd-numbered day (al-watr) is the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Naḥr)…

And it has also been said that it is the witnessed day (al-mashhūd) by which Allah swore in His Book when He, the Most High, said:

“And by the witnessing day and by the witnessed day.” [Sūrah al-Burūj: 3]

And from them: that it has been narrated that it is the best of days… A group of scholars held this view.

While others said: the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Naḥr) is the best of days.

And from them: that it is narrated from Anas ibn Mālik, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said:

‘It used to be said: The Day of ʿArafah is equal to ten thousand days,’ meaning in virtue.

And it is narrated from ʿAṭāʾ that he said:

‘Whoever fasts the Day of ʿArafah shall have the reward of two thousand days.’

And from them: that it is the Day of the Greater Pilgrimage (Yawm al-Ḥajj al-Akbar) according to a group from the Salaf, from them ʿUmar and others.

While others opposed them and said: The Day of the Greater Pilgrimage is the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Naḥr).

And from them: that fasting it is an expiation for two years.

And from them: that it is the day of forgiveness of sins, pardoning of them, emancipation from the Fire, and Allah boasting about the people standing at ʿArafah.”

A Reflective Pause on the Meaning of: “Allah, al-Ṣamad”

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

﴿ اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ ﴾
“Allah, al-Ṣamad.” [Al-Ikhlāṣ: 2]

Meaning: the One perfect in His attributes. He is completely free of need from others, while all of His creation is in need of Him. All creation turns to Him and depends upon Him.

For this reason, some of the scholars explained it by saying: al-Ṣamad is the One to whom the creation turns in fulfilling their needs.

This is why a person finds no one to truly turn to in times of need except Allah. This is something naturally ingrained within mankind. Even the disbelievers, when waves cover them like dark shadows, they call upon Allah. It is an instinctive matter that a person turns toward Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, in all of his needs.

And whoever turns to Allah regarding his needs in a correct manner—displaying his poverty and dependence before Allah, while having certainty in the power of Allah and the response of Allah—then his need will certainly be fulfilled.

However, what we lack is truthfulness. Either our turning to Allah contains deficiencies, or our belief in His promise contains deficiencies, and thus we lose out on tremendous goodness.

Otherwise, whoever seeks refuge with Allah with truthfulness and sincerity, Allah will protect him.

Imām an-Nawawi

Know that it is highly recommended to increase in dhikr during these ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah) more than other days and highly recommended to increase even more on the day of Arafah than the rest of the ten days.

FASTING REMINDER!!!

───────────────────

Fast tomorrow, the best day Allah created - the day of ‘Arafah!

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم informed us that fasting on this day will expiate two years of sins, the previous year and forthcoming year!!

Don’t lose this opportunity, every son of Adam sins, everyone is susceptible to committing sins, so strive to get them expiated.

One day of labour & sacrifice and Allah will forgive two years of your sins! What a bargain!

───────────────────

Make plenty of duah, this is a blessed day, rest assured your duah will be answered in sha’Allah as you went as a guest of Allah! Don’t lose and then regret you didn’t take full advantage of the opportunity, most importantly do not restrict your duah, nothing is too much or too great for Allah to bestow and grant! This is the time to secure your future, build your hereafter by imploring Him and get forgiven for your past. This is a generous day in which Allah forgives left, right and centre.

❖ Q: Are sins multiplied during the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah just as the reward is multiplied?

A: Yes. Just as the reward for righteous deeds is multiplied during these blessed days, sins are also more severe and grave with Allah.

These are the greatest days of the year, and Dhul Hijjah is also one of the four sacred months.

Allah said:

“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein…”
— [Surah At-Tawbah, 36]

• “…wrong not yourselves therein” means that sins committed during the sacred months are even more serious and severe.

❖ Virtues of the First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah

• The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.”

The companions asked: “Not even striving/fighting in the path of Allah?”

He ﷺ replied:

“Not even striving/fighting in the path of Allah, except for a man who went out with his life and wealth and returned with nothing.”
— Bukhārī

• The Prophet ﷺ said:

“There are no days greater in the sight of Allah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days, so increase in them your declaration of Tawḥīd (Lā ilāha illa Allāh), your Takbīr (Allāhu Akbar), and your Taḥmīd (Alḥamdulillāh).”
— Musnad Aḥmad

“There are four things the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never abandoned: fasting ‘Āshūrā’, the ten days (of Dhul Hijjah), three days of every month, and two rak‘ah before Fajr.”
— Sunan an-Nasā’ī

❖ Regarding the Day of ‘Arafah:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of ‘Arafah.”
— Muslim

Allah said:

“By the dawn; By the ten nights.”
— [Surah Al-Fajr, 1-2]

• The Salaf said these “ten nights” refer to the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.
• Allah took an oath by them highlighting its importance.

❖ So increase in:
• Tawbah & Istighfār
• Ṣalāh & Qur’an
• Dhikr & Takbīr
• Fasting
• Charity
• Good deeds

And stay far away from:
• Sins
• Backbiting
• Music
• Free-mixing
• Looking at ḥarām
• Wasting time

Because just as rewards are multiplied in these blessed days, sins are also more severe.

So turn back to Allah with sincere Tawbah and abundant Istighfār. Ask Allah for forgiveness constantly, for He is the Most Merciful, the Oft-Forgiving.

Make sincere repentance with:
• Regret for your sins
• Immediately leaving the sin
• A firm determination never to return to it

Allah said:

“Say: ‘O ‘Ibādi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’”
— [Surah Az-Zumar, 53]

No matter how many sins a person has committed, Allah forgives all sins when the servant sincerely turns to Him upon these conditions. Every son of Adam sins, the best of them are those who repent. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم admonished Mu’adh رضي الله عنه and said to him: “Fear Allah wherever you are and follow a bad deed with a good one, it will wipe it out…”

“And perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night [i.e. the five compulsory Salat (prayers)]. Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds (i.e. small sins). That is a reminder (an advice) for the mindful (those who accept advice).”

Revive the Sunnah of Takbīr

Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Lā ilāha illallāh,
Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar wa lillāhil-ḥamd.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“No person pronounces the talbiyah except that he is given glad tidings, and no person recites the takbīr except that he is given glad tidings.”

It was said: “Of Paradise?”

He ﷺ said: “Yes.”

📚Al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah (1621)

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

“As for magnifying Allah with raised voices, then it is the distinct symbol and manifest sign of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdillāh ﷺ and his nation.

And they would magnify Allah with loud and elevated voices in the adhān, on the day of Eid al-Fiṭr, on the day of Eid al-Aḍḥā, during the ten days of Dhul-Ḥijjah, and after the five obligatory prayers during the days of Minā.

And al-Bukhārī mentioned from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him, that he would recite the takbīr in Minā, and the people of the masjid would hear him and recite takbīr with his takbīr, and the people of the marketplaces would hear them and recite takbīr, until Minā would tremble with takbīr…

And Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, and Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, would go out to the marketplaces during the ten days, reciting takbīr, and the people would recite takbīr with their takbīr.”

The Ten Days of Dhul-Ḥijjah

As for the recommendation of increasing in dhikr (remembrance of Allah) during them, then the statement of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, indicates this:

“And mention the Name of Allah on known days.” [Al-Ḥajj: 28]

For indeed, the “known days” are the days of the ten according to the majority of the scholars.

And in the Musnad of Imam Aḥmad, from Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, from the Prophet ﷺ, that he said:

“There are no days greater with Allah, nor more beloved to Him for deeds to be performed in them, than these ten days. So increase in them in saying Lā ilāha illallāh, Allahu Akbar, and Alḥamdulillāh.”
