A lovely mum dropped her TENS back to us yesterday, and we had a chat about her birth.
It was her second baby. Her first labour had been traumatic. She said her birth labour felt out of control and scary, and it took her a long time to process what had happened. After a long and difficult labour, it ended in a C-section — something she really hadn’t wanted.
Like so many mums, she had hoped for a natural vaginal birth.
So when I asked her how things went this time, she smiled and said…
“C-section again.”
Then she said but his time was completely different.
She said that this time, she prepared. She did her homework. She prepared her body, but even more importantly, she prepared her mindset. She learnt about how her body and baby worked together during labour.
So this time she felt more prepared. More in control. More relaxed. More in tune with her body.
She laboured for hours at home and then at the birthing unit, using her breathing, her focus, her TENS machine and a different way of approaching each contraction.
And while her second birth still ended in a C-section, her experience was completely different.
It was calmer. More conscious. More empowering.
And I think that’s such an important reminder:
An empowering birth isn’t always about how your baby is born. It’s about how you feel during the journey.
She didn’t get the vaginal birth she had hoped for.
But she did get something incredibly valuable — an experience where she felt informed, prepared, involved and in control.
And I absolutely love that for her. 🤍
Sometimes birth doesn’t go to plan.
But that doesn’t mean it can’t still be a positive, powerful and deeply empowering experience.
