For most people, getting out of bed is something they never have to think about.

Mark Williams thinks about it every morning. He's been recognised for the work he does filling his property with Matariki light displays and he's our National Sales Manager. Every day starts in the same way, with the first transfer.

Odin is 6, and he has decided that his hoist is a wrestling arena.

His WWE figures have a royal rumble along the armrests while he waits his turn. Then it lifts him out of his chair, and every time, without being asked, he announces the same thing: "I'm Superman."

He has muscular dystrophy, and needs help moving from his wheelchair to the couch or the bed. This has become difficult for his petite mother. Enter the Kera transfer hoist, the thing that saves his mother's back and makes visits to grandma's house possible again.

In July, Seven Sharp told the story of our National Sales Manager, Mark Williams.

Friends and family had nominated him for ASB Good as Gold, and he won it, for the Christmas and Matariki light displays he builds for his community every year.

The cameras captured the lights, but Mark explains that the real story starts much earlier each morning.

"Before I can light up my community, I first need the freedom to begin my day."

Every day starts with getting out of bed and into his wheelchair. That first transfer is what makes the rest of the day possible.

"The Kera gives me the freedom to start each day safely, comfortably and with dignity. It also gives me the confidence to travel, visit customers, source products, attend exhibitions, and continue developing ideas that improve people's lives."

Lots of parents ask us the same thing: what happens when lifting stops being possible?

For one family it meant grandma's house came off the list. A 6-year-old, a mum who couldn't safely lift him, and no in-between option.

The very first Kera Travel ever sold went to Maureen and Peter Wood.

Maureen has MS, and they are serious travellers, five cruises and counting. When they heard there was going to be a portable Kera, they didn't wait to see how it went for other people. They bought number one.

That is how the Kera Travellers community works. The people using the Kera out in the world send back what they learn, and it makes the product better. After her latest trip, Maureen sent us a full set of travel tips for other families, plus a product idea: a Kera Travel with slightly bigger wheels could replace the narrow aisle chair used to board planes. "Every airline should have one."

This week our National Sales Manager was named an ASB Good as Gold recipient for something he has done for more than 25 years: turning his Napier home into a wonderland of lights that raises money for charity and gives families who need it a hand.

Hapai means to lift, to carry, to support. It is our name, and it is exactly what Mark does, every single day.

On the last day of their cruise to Bermuda, Frankie and Elena's family did something that made our week. They filmed us a video.

There's music and ship noise everywhere, the lighting is holiday-grade, and honestly, that's what makes it. A family at sea, mid-celebration, taking a minute to show us the Kera Travel doing its job on board.

This is what the Kera Travellers community looks like: people out living their lives, sending back what they learn so the next family knows the trip is possible.
