🚌 Accessible Public Transport in Christchurch

Did you know that all standard Metro buses in Christchurch are fitted with ramps and kneeling suspension, making boarding easier for people using wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility aids.

Metro drivers are trained to assist passengers, and all buses have priority seating near the front for people using mobility aids, travelling with service animals, or with prams. Small powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters are also welcome on board, provided they meet size requirements.

Newer buses feature wider aisles, larger priority seating areas, and improved spaces for mobility devices.

❄️ Winter Safety Tips 🌨️

A little preparation can help keep you safe, warm, and well this winter.

🚶 Prevent Falls
• Check walking aids, wheelchairs, and mobility scooters regularly.
• Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear.
• Take extra care on wet, frosty, or icy surfaces.
• Keep entrances dry, well-lit, and free from hazards.

🔥 Stay Warm Safely
• Keep heaters and fireplaces at least 1 metre from flammable items.
• Never use an oven or stovetop for heating.
• Check electric blankets for damage and switch them off before sleeping.
• Close curtains, block draughts, and wear layers.

💙 Look After Your Health
• Take medications as prescribed.
• Stay hydrated and eat regular, nutritious meals.

🌧️ Plan Ahead
• Avoid travel in severe weather where possible.
• Travel during daylight and allow extra time.
• Carry a mobile phone and let someone know your plans.

🔦 Be Emergency Ready
• Keep a torch, batteries, medications, food, and water on hand.
• Charge phones and devices before severe weather.
• Have important contact numbers and a power outage plan ready.

Stay safe, stay warm, and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.

Are your mobility scooter tyres wearing unevenly? 🧐

Uneven tyre wear is often an early warning sign that your scooter needs attention. Common causes include:

🎈 Incorrect tyre pressure - under or over-inflated tyres wear unevenly and reduce handling performance.
📐 Wheel alignment issues - misaligned wheels drag across the pavement instead of rolling smoothly.
⚖️ Overloading - excess weight puts extra strain on tyres, especially on corners and hills.
⚙️ Worn bearings or suspension - can cause wobbling, bouncing, and patchy tyre wear.
🛣️ Driving habits & terrain - curbs, uneven pavements, and sharp turns can increase wear on one side.

Catching these issues early can improve comfort, handling, safety, and help you avoid replacing tyres prematurely.

✅ Check tyre pressure regularly
✅ Stay within the scooter’s weight limit
✅ Have your scooter inspected and aligned regularly

How times have changed! 👏

Wheelchairs have evolved dramatically over the past century - transforming from heavy, bulky designs into modern mobility solutions focused on comfort, independence, and ease of use.

On the left is a wheelchair design commonly seen in the 1940s and 1950s, while on the right is the modern Goldfern transit wheelchair - available in our showroom. Featuring a lightweight frame - it’s easy to fold, lift, transport, and manoeuvre.

A major turning point came in the 1930s when Herbert Everest and Harry Jennings created the first commercially successful folding wheelchair - known as the “X-Frame,” after Everest was paralysed in a mining accident. Their innovative design transformed mobility by making wheelchairs lighter, portable, and more practical for everyday life.

By the 1950s, mass production made wheelchairs were more widely accessible, while the introduction of electric wheelchairs gave greater independence to people with limited upper-body mobility.

Today, wheelchairs are far more than assistive devices - they are tools for independence, accessibility, confidence, and self-expression. Continued innovation, combined with the advocacy and lived experiences of disabled people, has helped shape the modern mobility solutions we see today.

We’re proud to stock innovative mobility equipment that helps people live with greater comfort, freedom, and independence ♿️💙
