Do you get lost in medical jargon? It's okay to ask questions! We're here to help you understand it all, though. Let's start here:

Biopsy.

A biopsy is the removal of cells or tissue so a pathologist can examine it. There are different ways to perform a biopsy, and the approach depends on what needs to be evaluated.

A biopsy is a diagnostic step. The word itself does not tell you the result. Your healthcare provider can explain why a biopsy is recommended, how it will be performed and once examined, the results can be discussed.

Is there a medical or surgical term you have questions about? Let us know and we'll translate it for you.

Quick surgical myth quiz:

1. A consultation with a surgeon always leads to an operation.
2. Vitamins and supplements do not count as medications.
3. Recovery instructions can differ from one patient or procedure to another.
4. It is okay to ask your surgeon to explain an unfamiliar term.

Hemorrhoids are common, but some symptoms deserve medical attention, especially bleeding, severe pain, or flare-ups that keep coming back.

Our latest blog explains when hemorrhoids may be more than a minor annoyance, what warning signs to watch for, and how a provider can help you understand your treatment options.

'Limit your activity' can sound vague. Depending on the procedure, it may include specific guidance about lifting, driving, work, exercise, household tasks or sports. The details matter: a short walk and carrying a heavy laundry basket are both activity, but they may not be treated the same during recovery.

Before you leave your appointment, ask what you can do, what to avoid and when restrictions may change. Follow the instructions provided for your procedure and contact your surgical team when something is unclear.

Save this reminder for your pre-op or follow-up questions.

A wound that is slow to heal may be more than a minor skin problem. Poor circulation, diabetes, infection, pressure, and other health factors can all affect the body’s ability to repair tissue.

Our latest blog explains why some wounds do not heal as expected, what signs to watch for, and when it may be time to seek medical care.

Myth: Surgeons only perform operations.

A surgeon's role often begins well before an operating room is considered. The visit may include reviewing symptoms and records, performing an exam, discussing testing, explaining treatment choices and answering questions. Surgery may be one option, but it is not always the recommendation.

After a procedure, surgeons also guide follow-up and recovery based on the patient's needs. A consultation is a conversation about the full picture and the most appropriate next step.

Laparoscopic surgery means a procedure is performed through smaller incisions instead of one larger opening. It's what we also refer to as "minimally invasive."

For some patients and some conditions, this approach may help reduce disruption to the body and support a smoother recovery. The best surgical plan depends on the condition being treated, your overall health, and what your surgeon sees during evaluation.
