Sitting in the unknown is hard, and we can try to find safety and control by worrying, predicting, and problem-solving in advance. But this leads to its own stress and anxiety, often far worse that the anxiety we're trying to prevent.

Not knowing can bring up a lot: anxiety, self-doubt, the urge to get reassurance, or the tendency to pull away first.

But just because we feel this discomfort, doesn’t mean we have to act on it.

When ambiguity enters a relationship, pause and ask:

What do I actually know, and how do I want to respond while I wait for more information?

That pause gives you room to separate fact from story, tolerate the uncertainty, and let more information unfold before deciding what to do.

That’s where repatterning happens.

If the same kind of problem keeps returning, the immediate problem may not be the whole problem - it may be one expression of a larger pattern.

Sometimes the work is not just fixing what happened, it’s understanding what keeps allowing it to happen again and again.

There’s nothing wrong with being ambitious. Wanting to grow, learn, and accomplish more can be deeply meaningful.

But using achievement to prove your worth is a set-up for feeling like you’re never quite enough.

So what do we do instead?

We practice trusting ourselves.

Trusting ourselves to problem-solve in the moment, when we actually know what we’re dealing with. Trusting ourselves to adjust when something unexpected happens. Worst-case scenario, if something does go wrong, trusting ourselves to be able to get through it. Because look at the kinds of stuff we’ve already been through in our lives - all manner of things, and somehow, we got through it.

And….and…..maybe nothing will go wrong! That’s another real possibility.

Future forecasting promises us control, but there’s no way to hack life and think ourselves out of discomfort. At some point, we have to trade “I need to know what’s going to happen” for “I trust myself to respond to what happens.”

That’s the practice, and trust me, I’m practicing right alongside, y’all 😩

Three people can experience the same conflict and walk away with completely different stories about what happened.

This is not because one cared more, but because each reached for a different strategy to manage the discomfort, protect the relationship, or regain a sense of control.

Same situation. Different strategies. Different outcomes.

You learned not to add to anyone’s stress.

Be good. Be easy. Handle it yourself.

Now, being “good” is expected everywhere.

What once helped you preserve connection became a role with no room for you.

Many of us didn’t learn to ask for what we needed. Some of us learned that asking led to invalidation.

So we found other ways: being helpful, agreeable, accomplished, indispensable, or pretending we didn’t need anything at all.

Our needs are non-negotiable, so we developed strategies to try to get them met.

What helped us then may be shaping how we relate now.

Maybe you learned to keep the peace, to pull away before you could be disappointed, or to always be useful.

These weren’t random habits. They helped you navigate relationships when you needed them.

You can understand why a strategy developed, and still decide it no longer belongs in every relationship.
