Every surgical technique begins with a decision.

At UOBC, clinical case discussions and hands-on training are designed to work together. Surgeons evaluate clinical scenarios, consider the anticipated surgical defect, discuss oncoplastic and reconstructive options, and explore how those decisions translate into technical ex*****on.

This integrated approach connects the key stages of surgical training:

Case Analysis → Surgical Planning → Technique Selection → Technical Ex*****on

Because developing surgical expertise requires more than learning how to perform a technique. It requires understanding when to use it, why it is appropriate, and how it fits into the overall surgical plan.

Choosing an oncoplastic technique should never happen in isolation.

Tumor location, resection volume, the tumor-to-breast ratio, breast anatomy, and the anticipated surgical defect all play a role in determining the most appropriate approach.

The key questions come before the technique: What defect will the resection create? Is volume displacement sufficient? Is volume replacement needed? How will the surgical plan affect breast shape, symmetry, and nipple-areola complex position?

At UOBC, case-based discussions help surgeons work through these variables, compare surgical options, and understand the decision-making behind technique selection and reconstructive planning.

Oncoplastic surgery starts with understanding the anticipated defect—not with choosing a technique.

Effective surgical training requires more than exposure to individual techniques. It requires understanding how patient selection, surgical planning, technical ex*****on, and critical discussion work together.

At UOBC, the training experience is structured around this integrated approach. Participants work through clinical case discussions, oncoplastic techniques, local perforator flaps—including AICAP, MICAP, and LICAP—and implant-based reconstructive strategies.

Each component of the course is designed to connect surgical decision-making with hands-on technical training and direct faculty feedback.

Patient Selection → Surgical Planning → Technical Ex*****on → Critical Discussion

The goal is to help surgeons understand not only how to perform a technique, but also when and why to use it.

Breast surgery does not always have to be approached as a series of separate procedures.

For appropriately selected patients, oncologic resection and reconstruction can be planned as part of a coordinated surgical approach—considering oncologic safety, the anticipated defect, breast shape, symmetry, and reconstructive goals from the start.

One Surgeon. One Surgery. reflects an integrated approach to breast surgery: developing the expertise to evaluate the entire case and, when clinically appropriate, combine oncologic, oncoplastic, and reconstructive principles within a single operative plan.

At UOBC, surgeons develop the decision-making skills and technical expertise needed to approach breast surgery from a more comprehensive perspective.

Think beyond the resection. Plan the entire operation.

Understanding a surgical technique is only the beginning. Developing technical proficiency requires structured practice, repetition, and meaningful feedback.

Simulation-based training gives surgeons the opportunity to work through key technical steps, identify challenges, explore different approaches, and refine their ex*****on in a controlled learning environment.

At UOBC, Mastotrainer™ is integrated into hands-on training across a range of oncoplastic and reconstructive techniques. Participants move beyond observation—practicing surgical approaches, discussing technical decisions, and receiving direct faculty feedback throughout the learning process.

Techniques can be taught. Surgical skills are developed through practice, repetition, and feedback.

Innovation begins with a simple question: How can surgeons train more effectively before entering the operating room?

Developed by Gustavo Zucca, MD, PhD, Mastotrainer™ was created to provide a realistic, hands-on learning experience that helps surgeons refine their technical skills and build confidence in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery.

Today, it is an integral part of the Ultimate Oncoplastic Breast Course, allowing participants to practice advanced techniques in a structured educational environment before applying them in clinical practice.

At UOBC, innovation is driven by one goal: advancing surgical education to improve patient care.

June 2026 Course Highlights

Three days of learning, collaboration, and hands-on training brought breast surgeons together in Atlanta for an immersive educational experience in oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery.

Throughout the course, participants engaged in evidence-based lectures, interactive case discussions, and practical simulation sessions designed to strengthen clinical decision-making and refine surgical techniques.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to another successful UOBC edition.

We look forward to welcoming you back in 2026.

What Participants Are Saying

Every UOBC course is built around one goal: providing practical, evidence-based education that surgeons can apply in their daily practice.

There is no better way to understand the experience than hearing directly from those who participated.

Thank you to Marcia M. Schmidt, MD, and Sandra Tomlinson-Hansen, MD, for sharing their experience and being part of the UOBC community.

We look forward to welcoming the next group of surgeons to Atlanta in 2026.
