A lip tie occurs when the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums (the labial frenulum) is excessive and causing restriction. Depending on the baby, it may affect how the upper lip moves and can contribute to feeding, latch, or other functional concerns.
👄 Signs to look for can include:
• Blanching: the tissue or surrounding gums may turn white when the upper lip is lifted or stretched.
• Notching: a visible indentation or notch in the gum tissue where the frenulum attaches.
• Limited upper-lip movement or difficulty flanging the lip outward.
• Tension or discomfort when lifting the upper lip.

These sings mean it’s time to dig deeper and ask questions. A functional evaluation with a dentist who specializes in oral ties can help you make the right decisions for treatment and care.

Lip ties can cause just as much damage to feeding as tongue ties, and just because we don’t know everything there is to know about the why behind oral ties doesn’t mean we can’t support families in real time. You can see the notching and blanching on this baby’s gums when we try to fl**ge the top lip. You can see the difference between the top and bottom frenulum.
