One thing I would scream to pregnant moms from the rooftop is:

Frequent feeding is normal!

Newborns are designed to nurse often, especially in the early weeks.

It’s great for your baby, and your milk supply🤍

When would we worry about frequent feeding? If baby doesn’t seem satisfied after the feeds or if feeds seem like they never end.

A ni**le shield is one of the most common devices given to mothers in the hospital right after delivery.

The reasons vary, but ultimately, I have found the most common cause is the lack of time for hospital staff to adequately help breastfeeding moms with latching.

They should not be used unless under the direct supervision of a lactation consultant, ideally an out-patient consultant they have established care with and have regular access to.

Ni**le shields can be a great tool, but they also have the ability to negatively impact breastfeeding the breastfeeding relationship🥺

We help mom‘s ditch the ni**le shield all the time so comment SHIELD if you need help🫶🏻

What we typically call a “clogged duct” actually isn’t a big chunk of milk or fat blocking things.

It’s actually compression of the milk duct caused by inflammation. Milk can’t flow well because the duct is narrowed not because there’s something stuck.

Using a balloon and a straw is my favorite way to visualize this😂🎈

Sippy cups aren’t bad, but they are basically a bottle when you look at how the tongue is working…

This is why they’re often so easy for most babies.

But a straw cup encourages a different set of skills that help support feeding swallowing, and speech development later on.

Around six months, feel free to start offering water in a cup…

And know that it can be a straw cup. It doesn’t have to be a sippy cup🫶🏻

A clogged duct isn’t a plug that just randomly gets caught in your breast.

It’s important to know what’s actually going on in your breast so that you know how to make it better!

It’s actually inflammation and we need to decrease the inflammation to get things flowing well again🥰
