If you’ve ever felt stuck and not making AAC progress, chances are you’re not using the AAC Prompt Hierarchy. Conversations floating around lately from both parents and SLPs got me thinking we are NOT talking enough about the supports our users need. Using prompts and cues to support our users is not controversial, it’s necessary, and the AAC Prompt Hierarchy is a whole vibe. Looking to get in on the vibe? Pop your questions and comments below.

Parents often ask me if I work on general speech ALSO or just AAC, and I tell them “just AAC.” AAC is complex; from understanding how the user accesses a device to selecting and implementing a proper system, it’s not something that should be taken lightly. When you choose to work with an AAC specialist, you’re working with someone who is able to focus solely on an area of expertise. This automatically means your child is working with someone that knows the ins and outs and WILL move your child to communication success. When deciding if you should work with your speech therapist for AAC, consider this through the lenses of medical specialties. They’re not the same. It might mean more appointments, but it definitely will mean greater success. Give your child the AAC success they DESERVE and work with an AAC specialist.

In life, mindset matters. I tell my kids all the time, the way we think about something shifts our brain to thinking positively or negatively. This is absolutely the case with AAC. When we approach AAC with this mindset, we give our AAC users the life they deserve. Communication doesn’t happen in one place, in one moment, and a tool based approach ensures communication happens everywhere in every moment. Let’s start thinking of what supports we can give our AAC users to support them in every moment.
