Clinic Happenings 🐾

Recently, one of our receptionists, Melissa, had to make an unexpected pit stop on her way to work when she spotted a sweet kitten in need of help along a busy highway.

This unlucky little guy had quite the change of fate! After receiving the care he needed, he is now happily adjusting to life as a tripod. 🐾❤️

While he continues to recover, he’ll be staying here at the clinic, where one of our staff members will eventually bring him home. Needless to say, he is already VERY loved by the whole team—and he’s officially earned the nickname “Skidmark.”

Blaze stopped by for a wellness exam and a fresh pedicure! 💅 Routine checkups help ensure reptiles stay healthy by monitoring their weight, discussing husbandry and nutrition, and catching potential health concerns before they become bigger problems.

The holiday weekend is quickly approaching and we would like to share a few tips and reminders to make sure you and your pets have a good weekend!

* 💙 Our office is closed Friday and Saturday for the holiday, please keep this in mind if you’re needing medication refills.
* 🎆 Keep pets indoors before fireworks begin. Even pets that normally enjoy being outside can panic and escape.
* 🏷️ Double-check ID tags and microchip information are current. The Fourth of July is one of the busiest days of the year for lost pets.
* 🎶 Play calming music, white noise, or the TV to help mask fireworks.
* 🦴 Provide enrichment like a stuffed Kong, lick mat, puzzle toy, or long-lasting chew to keep them occupied.
* 🏠 Create a quiet “safe zone” with their bed, favorite toys, blankets, and fresh water where they can retreat.
* 🚶 Exercise your pet early in the day before celebrations begin so they’re more likely to rest later.
* 💊 Talk to your veterinarian ahead of time if your pet has a history of severe noise anxiety. Prescription medications work best when planned in advance.

✨Pet Spotlight✨

Turner, one of our own employee pets, recently underwent a lung lobectomy after a mass was identified here at the clinic. Thanks to Dr. Vander Wiel for the early detection, he was able to receive timely care with the incredible team at Iowa State for surgery.

Turner is a great reminder of how important it is to pay attention to subtle changes and to keep up with regular veterinary exams. Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment options and outcomes.

We’re happy to share that Turner is recovering well and on the road to feeling like himself again! We will continue to hope for positive lab results and a speedy recovery!💙💙

It’s BABY season!

Things to keep in mind if you come across young wildlife that you think may be in need of help:
🔵 Before taking action, contact a wildlife rehabilitator to see if baby needs assistance.

⬆️⬆️ Both resources listed can help you find a rehabber near you!

🔵 If you find a baby animal that does need help:
1. No matter the species, keep it warm, and in a dark/quiet place. Minimize handling to avoid stress.
2. Do not try to feed or water.

Remember that some species such as deer and rabbits leave their young unattended for extended periods of time to avoid drawing attention of predators.

🔵 REMINDER: Most rehabbers are volunteers. You may need to leave a message or assist in transporting the animal to the rehabber.
