CURTSY LUNGE for
Dynamic Lower Body Stabilization

Great 👍🏼 DYNAMIC COMPOUND EXERCISE requiring LITTLE TO NO EQUIPMENT

Load: Dumbbell, Kettlebell, Bowling Ball, or NOTHING (just Body Weight).

Symmetry: Can load BOTH HANDS, or purposely ASYMMETRIC, like pictured above which SIMULATES FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT in the sport of bowling 🎳.

Training 🎯: CORE, HIPS, LEGS, Dynamic BALANCE, all of which are necessary for athletic performance!

Focus: Motor Control and Coordination; with Gaze Stabilization on your target line.

Technique:
🔑 One foot firmly in front of you, move your curtsy leg back diagonally back and behind you.
🔑 CORE ENGAGED with head and chest upright
🔑 Maintain knee stable (not caving IN or OUT)
🔑 Slowly lower your back knee until it is near the ground while under CONTROL
🔑 Engage your GLUTES as you stand back up

Perform 6 quality reos on one leg, then 6 on the other leg, which equals one set.
3 sets in total.

Feel free to vary load type, placement, as well as isometric hold at end range of lunge position 👊🏼

Amleto Monacelli demonstrates great control and posture throughout this exercise designed to MAXIMIZE POWER GENERATION from your LOWER HALF! 💪🏻

Overcoming the Injury Cascade

The rigors of the PBA TOUR season will no doubt yield to overuse injuries. Whether it’s minor tweaks or moderate strains and sprains, no athlete is immune.

Engaging in consistent training comprised of:
✅ Mobility
✅ Activation
✅ Neuromuscular Control Drills
✅ Strengthening
✅ Power Development
✅ Recovery
can help mitigate the frequency, intensity, and debility from the demands of a long season (especially without any breaks!)

Early this season, Hall of Famer, Tommy Jones, Tommy Jones experienced a strain of his right hip flexor. Forging on, continued imposed demands caused an OVERUSE INJURY of his groin (ADDUCTOR MUSCLES) from COMPENSATING for a compromised hip flexor. Deeper into the season at the World Series of Bowling (WSOB), Tommy approached me seeking help with his HAMSTRINGS, as the lower kinetic chain continued to get overloaded.

We educated him about the complexity of his injuries and embarked on a program to address dysfunction and return him to his elite level of performance.

The video clip above 👆 does not show myofascial release & soft tissue mobility.
What is shown is using Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) to boost ACTIVATION of his compromised hamstring muscle group.
I am performing Manual Resisted Exercise (MRE) to provide graduated resistance efforts through this Range of Motion (ROM) to optimize return of normal muscle function.

The next clip shows Tommy lying on a softball (not seen) as he engages in Self Myofascial Release (SMR) with movement to help mobilize and decrease muscle tone & spasm throughout the front of his hip.

Subsequent clip shows the importance of using ISOMETRICS and SLOW ECCENTRICS with sliders to help fortify and best functionally STRENGTHEN his hamstrings. 💪

Tommy was issued a Home Exercise Program (HEP) so that he could proactively and independently advance same so that he could return to being at his best!

Appreciate the opportunity to work with such an elite athlete and humbled and growing through the experience. 🙏

LOADED CARRIES are a phenomenal way to build FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH

Don’t let lack of “formal” exercise equipment deter you from getting a great MOVEMENT PREP before you do “stuff!” 🤗

Loaded Carries come in many forms & varieties. While working with PBA Hall of Famer at the during the World Series of Bowling (WSOB), we were looking to find an efficient stimulus that would feed multiple birds with one crumb to achieve:
⭐️ Core Strength
⭐️ Grip Strength
⭐️ Postural Integrity
⭐️ Balance
⭐️ Coordination
⭐️ Posterior Chain ACTIVATION

We opted for BACKWARDS TANDEM WALK LOADED CARRIES to accomplish that task. 🙌🏋️💪 🧠
Though in the traditional strength training sense, we would urge using a heavier load to optimize STRENGTHENING efforts, a 15 # bowling ball in each was accessible, simple, and appropriate for the goal of MOVEMENT PREP or ACTIVATION.

Though many variations exist (Farmer’s Walk, Suitcase Carry, Crosswalk Carry, Waiter’s Carry, Bear Hug Carry, etc), the important mindfulness tenets are outlined below. 👇

Key Points of Performance
The Setup & Pick-Up
* Safe Stance: Treat the lift-off like a deadlift. Position your feet shoulder-width apart, hinge at the hips, and squat down with a flat back.

* Neutral Spine: Grip the handles firmly, look straight ahead, and avoid rounding your lower back when standing up.

Stride Mechanics
* Short, Quick Steps: Instead of long, lumbering strides, take small, compact, and quick steps. This keeps your center of gravity stable.

* Smooth Gait: Walk as though you are balancing a cup of water on your head. Avoid bouncing or jerking your body to generate momentum.

* Footwork: Plant your foot fully on the ground with each step to absorb impact and maintain torque.

5. Breathing
* Rhythmic Breath: Avoid holding your breath. Take steady, deep breaths into your belly to maintain intra-abdominal pressure without passing out.

The Human Body Functions as a Linked Kinetic Chain

When requested some “Help! 😆” (listen in the clip above) for some issues he was experiencing in his right elbow and forearm, we did not take a myopic view just at the elbow, but evaluated both UP & DOWN the Upper Extremity Kinetic Chain. Not shown in the video above 👆 was the exam of his wrist and hand. What is being highlighted here, is the need to objectively assess the one joint ABOVE where the symptoms are, in order to better understand the totality of the clinical picture, as well as best identify the root cause and embark on a plan to fix the issues more permanently. 👍

Comparing the amount of uncompensated SHOULDER ROTATION, most notably here INTERNAL ROTATION(IR), we observe a significant (45-50 degrees) DECREASE in right vs left IR. We don’t expect exact symmetry, though this difference is significant. We need to take into account the functional demands of the specificity of athlete movement & use. Though a bowler, especially World #1 ranked bowling athlete, EJ Tackett, uses his posterior right rotator cuff muscles quite a bit through his delivery, the amount of external rotation demands do not approach that of a MLB baseball pitcher; hence why we focused a bunch of treatment strategies around the shoulder complex.

The interventions shown include:
💎 Myofascial release of R Upper Extremity
💎 Manual Resisted Exercise (MRE) for Rotator Cuff, specifically, SUPRASPINATUS
💎 Rhythmic Stabilization of Rotatir Cuff
💎 Soft Tissue Mobilization of Scapular Elevators, Levator Scap & Upper Trap
💎 Scapular Mobilizations & Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)

Our teamwork is aimed at overcoming the nagging injuries from the demands of a season. Trying our best to put EJ in a position to win his FOURTH CONSECUTIVE World Championship 🏆

Tune in this SATURDAY on CBS!
Semifinals from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm EST

EJ is the TOP SEED
Championship Round airs from 1:00 - 3:00 EST

SIDE PLANK CLAM SHELL

Most athletes don’t train sufficiently in the coronal (lateral) plane and have dysfunction directly related to weakness or neglect of training your LATERAL POWERLINE!

It is important to focus on training BOTH CORE STABILITY and HIP MOBILITY & STRENGTH 💪🏻 which is the essence of FUNCTIONAL STABILITY TRAINING.

Note: this is NOT a beginner exercise—> you NEED TO PERFORM BOTH EXERCISES WELL INDIVIDUALLY before performing them together, as above demonstrates 👊🏼

This exercise is a GREAT, SIMPLE, & EFFECTIVE way to facilitate External Rotators of the HIP (on the TOP SIDE) while simultaneously training your LATERAL POWERLINE (on the UNDERNEATH SIDE) 🤩

You know we are all about feeding multiple birds with one crumb, so this exercise is a keen way to work both the TOP & BOTTOM sides, as your bottom side needs to STABILIZE YOUR PELVIS AND SPINE 👌🏻

Tips:
⭐️ Elongate your spine through ENGAGING YOUR CORE
⭐️ Maintain straight and neutral head and neck throughout (this part is challenging!)
⭐️ Place your hand on your core or your top hip to prevent compensation from your low back 🤙🏼
⭐️ Really emphasize control and getting to the absolute end Range of Motion (ROM), while keeping everything stable!
⭐️ Tempo of reps: 1 second up; 2 seconds SLOWLY lowering under CONTROL

Don’t forget to do the other side as well.

Resistance is not necessarily needed, but THE PROGRESSION challenge is adding RESISTANCE (Looped Band, Cuff Weight, or Manual Resistance)

Give this a try and drop a comment to share how much better YOUR BACK feels from doing just 2 sets of 8-10 of these with CONTROL on both sides!

💎 JEFFERSON CURLS 💎

💪 are a loaded mobility exercise where you sequentially flex your spine—curling down one vertebra at a time—while holding a light weight. They offer profound benefits for flexibility, spinal health, and injury resilience by training the body to safely tolerate and generate force while bent.

⭐️ Superior Posterior Chain Flexibility
The exercise places a deep, active stretch on the entire back of your body (the posterior chain). This allows you to achieve significantly deeper hamstring flexibility and dramatically improve your ability to touch your toes.

⭐️ Segmental Spinal Control and Health
Many people move their backs as one rigid block. Jefferson Curls force your nervous system to focus on individual vertebral segments. This builds strength and body awareness in the deep-core muscles of your lower, middle, and upper back.

⭐️ Injury Resilience
The movement prepares your spine and connective tissues to handle vulnerable, rounded positions. By gradually loading (*LIGHT LOAD) the spine in a controlled manner, you condition the discs and tissues, reducing the risk of a “thrown out” back when picking up heavy, awkward objects in daily life.

⭐️ Corrects Posterior Tightness
Spending hours sitting causes the lower back and hamstrings to tighten. Jefferson Curls counteract these unnatural, shortened positions through active stretching and movement.

⭐️ Improved Athletic Performance
Weightlifters and gymnasts use them heavily to achieve the extreme flexion required for positions like pikes, V-sits, and cleans.

Props to for engaging in all the Movement Prep necessary to optimize his performance here before doing his Hall of Fame jam at the PBA50 World Series of Bowling (WSOB)! 🙌. His commitment to conditioning has been no doubt one of the key components of his success over the last four decades! 🏃‍♂️ 💪 🎳

Triumph of Grit & Determination to Overcome Adversity - MATT SANDERS

After sustaining a freak and gruesome injury to his right lower leg on July 6, 2025, was uncertain if he would walk again. A large and HEAVY piece of glass fell on his leg, 🤕 severing tendons and causing nerve damage to the muscles and tendons in his foot and ankle. Matt put his nose to the grindstone and was steadily steering the ship to optimize his post-operative recovery. Amazingly, in just 8 short months later, he performed so well that he earned an exclusive spot in the Finals in a Major, the U.S. Open! 💪🤩🙌

Appreciating the opportunity to work with Matt at the World Series of Bowling (WSOB)🙏 The video clips above don’t show our manual work together: myofascial release, joint mobilizations, manual resisted exercises (MRE), among others…but the real story here is Matt! Never complaining, maintaining a positive mental attitude, and focusing only on what we can control (the task at hand); results manifested! I can’t wait to see what happens when this athlete gets close to 💯!
Watch out!!
Thanks for the lesson, Sandy! 👊🫵
