World Mental Health Day tends to get reduced to a mood check, as if the measure of your mental health is how you feel this morning. Mood is information, but it rarely tells you where the real problem is. The parts of a life that go thin first are usually the ones we stopped tending because they were quiet: the work that no longer means anything, the relationship running on habit, the spiritual life postponed until things settle down.

Your mental health rests on whether your days are pointed at something you value. Feeling better is not the same as building a life you don’t need to escape from, and only one of those holds when things get hard.

So today, skip the checklist and ask the harder question: what have you stopped paying attention to, and who are you deciding to become?

Link in bio if you’re ready to answer that with more than a mood.

Some people keep most of their lives offline and never think much about it, so that when a coworker asks what they did over the weekend they answer plainly, or decline to, and the conversation moves on without either of them noticing. Other people feel a small, specific relief every time a day passes in which nobody asked, a relief that arrives so routinely they have stopped registering it as relief at all.

Two dates this month, eighteen days apart, one asking us to look at our own mental health and the other honoring people trained not to. You don’t need a badge or a uniform to learn that lesson, since plenty of people learned it at a kitchen table and it rarely gets examined because it keeps working.

Who would notice if you stopped holding it together?

Who You Were Before

It comes up early, usually within the first few sessions, phrased almost the same way every time. I just want to get back to who I was before. Before the affair, before the diagnosis, before the year that took the whole thing apart. The person being described is always described generously, and always by someone with a reason to describe her that way. She’s also the one who walked into this without seeing it coming.

You’re not dramatic for feeling it. You’re not lazy. That’s your nervous system doing exactly what it’s designed to do—responding to environmental cues.

WHAT TO DO 🍂🧘🏻‍♀️
Move gently. Your nervous system needs titration, not intensity. Hydrate more than usual—pressure changes affect fluid balance. Sleep heavier if you can; your body’s asking for recovery. Ground yourself—five minutes with your feet on the earth or hands in cold water. And know it passes. Usually 48 to 72 hours after the pressure stabilizes.

Your body’s not your enemy. It’s just reading the room.

The drive from Columbus to Dayton was eerily still. No traffic. No highway patrol running speed. My route took me past Wright-Patterson, where the quiet broke open for the low growl of a caravan of military humvees moving down the interstate, and then closed back over the road behind them.

Twenty-five years later, there’s a generation of first responders who have no morning to describe. They carry the day anyway.
