🎓✨ Congratulations to one of our own!

We are so incredibly proud of this milestone. Watching our residents grow, heal, and thrive is exactly why we do what we do — and moments like this remind us of the power of community, support, and belief in one another.

At ADWO Behavioral Services, our residential homes are more than just a place to stay. They are safe spaces where individuals are met with compassion, equipped with tools for lasting change, and celebrated every step of the way. This is what making a difference looks like.

To our incredible resident — your resilience, your courage, and your journey inspire everyone around you. This is just the beginning. 🌱💛

We are honored to walk alongside you.

When a child hits, it can feel shocking, frustrating, and sometimes even personal. But hitting isn’t about a “bad” child — it’s a sign of an overwhelmed brain that hasn’t yet learned how to cope. Behind the behaviour is a child who needs support, guidance, and skills they don’t yet have.

In the Supporting the Child Who Hits Toolkit, I’ll walk you through why children hit, what’s really happening in their nervous system, and how to respond in a way that actually teaches, rather than just stops the behaviour in the moment.

Because when we understand the “why,” we can respond in ways that build safer, calmer, more connected children.
If you’re feeling stuck, reactive, or unsure what to do next — this is for you.

Some children are not ignoring you. They just cannot respond in that moment.

They might be deeply focused on what they are doing. They might not have processed what you said yet. They might feel overwhelmed, tired, or unsure what you actually mean. And sometimes, the more we repeat instructions, the less children really hear them.

What looks like “not listening” is often a child struggling with attention, understanding, or emotions.

When adults shift from repeating, raising their voice, or assuming defiance, and instead slow down, connect, and give clear, simple guidance, behaviour often changes.

Children do better when they feel understood, not controlled.

If this is something you see at home or in your setting, you are not alone.

Parenting a child with behavioral challenges can feel overwhelming at times. You’re trying your best — and that matters more than you know.

Small changes in how we respond can make a big difference. Regulating before correcting, staying consistent, naming emotions, and creating simple routines can help children feel safe and understood.

Behavior is communication. When we learn to look beneath the behavior, we create space for growth.

If your family needs extra support, ADWO Behavioral Services is here to help. Through wraparound services, day treatment, and residential support, we walk alongside families every step of the way.

You don’t have to figure it out alone.
