Have you heard of self-compassion? It just might be the secret sauce to your eating disorder recovery. Psychologist Dr. Kristin Neff says that self-compassion has 3 main pillars:

1. Self-kindness: instead of being critical of yourself, choose understanding and warmth when you feel pain or feel inadequate.
2. Common humanity: recognizing that everyone makes mistakes and suffers, which connects you to others rather than isolating you.
3. Mindfulness: observing your thoughts and emotions in a mindful way, without repressing them or letting them overtake you.

One of our favorite ways to practice self compassion, is placing a hand on your heart and taking a deep breath. Acknowledge what is difficult, and talk to yourself like you would a friend or loved one. πŸ’š

It's another HOT one out there. πŸ₯΅A good reminder for everyone, but especially those with an eating disorder, is to make sure you are staying hydrated, nourished, and resting in this weather. Your body might be feeling uncomfortable in this heat, and that is normal for everyone.

Don't let it impact how you care for yourself - you deserve to be hydrated and fed. In this weather, restricting fluids or food or exercising when your body needs to rest can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Be gentle with yourself, this heat is no joke! πŸ’š

Today's affirmation is a quote from the inspiring, powerhouse legend we lost last week, Dolly Parton. You are valuable because you are you, and anyone who tells you otherwise (whether it's another person or your eating disorder voice) doesn't deserve your time. We miss you, Dolly. Thanks for this wonderful reminder to always believe in yourself. πŸ’š

This is such a spot-on quote from 's incredible book, SLIP. It's a must-read for eating disorder providers and anyone in eating disorder recovery. Mallary describes the messiness of eating disorder recovery and relapses, and does it in such an honest and relatable way, shedding new awareness on the true difficulty of recovery. Add it to your bookshelf if you haven't already read it!

A simple but important affirmation for the new week: perfect doesn't exist. Social media makes it seem like perfect does exist, and exists for everyone but you. Remember that social media is a curated story and not the whole picture.

Eating disorder recovery is messy. It's not linear, and it's definitely not perfect. Just keep showing up and doing the work, whatever it looks like. That's what we're aiming for, and what you should be too. Let go of the notion of "perfect," and keep going! πŸ’š

Media (including social media) and your eating disorder voice get very focused on diet and exercise being the only determinant of health. The urgency that both stress towards what you eat, how much you exercise, and optimizing both can make it feel like eating a cookie or skipping a workout is fatal.

But diet and exercise are only one piece of the puzzle. Your total health is actually so much more. It includes occupational, social, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical, environmental, and financial wellness. Holistic health factors in everything in your life- your satisfaction with work, your purpose in life, your connection with others, your sleep, your environment, your ability to be creative and learn new things, your coping skills.

Remember this when you prioritize sleep over a workout, or go out to eat with friends instead of staying home for a safe meal on your own. You deserve to be healthy, however that looks for you! πŸ’š

We are big fans of snacks at Olive Branch Nutrition! Eating every few hours is so important for maintaining blood sugar and keeping your brain and body functioning at their best.

When you have an eating disorder, your ED voice will tell you that you aren't hungry enough or don't need a snack. Diet culture thrives on you ignoring your body. But trust us, you need a snack!

There is no "perfect" snack. A snack is something that can tide you over until your next meal, something to give you energy, or something yummy. Happy snacking!
