What is Animism?🌎🐾🪶
Animism is the worldview that all things—animals, plants, rocks, rivers, weather systems, and sometimes human handiwork—possess a distinct spiritual essence, soul, or consciousness. Rooted in indigenous cultures, it perceives the world as a community of living, interconnected "persons," rather than just resources to be exploited.
•Derived from the Latin anima ("soul, breath"), the term was popularized by anthropologist Edward Tylor to describe a belief in "animated nature". It is often considered one of the earliest human belief systems, prioritizing relationships and reciprocity with the natural world.
•Animists believe that non-human entities have agency, free will, and can interact with or affect human life.
•Relationship-Focused. Rather than a strict doctrine, it is a perspective of treating the environment with respect, often involving rituals to honor the spirits within trees, mountains, or water.
•Cultural Context. While often associated with indigenous, traditional, or tribal religions, elements of animism exist in various cultures, including Shintoism in Japan and some forms of Neo-paganism.
•Distinction from Other Beliefs. Unlike materialism, it asserts that the world is not just dead matter. Unlike monotheism, it doesn't necessarily focus on a single supreme creator.
